Cycle for Survival Update #15

By Cailie Burns | Development Officer

Earlier this year, an unprecedented medical milestone was reached. The results of the first 10,000 patients who had their tumors sequenced by MSK were revealed.

Based on the findings:

  • 1,000 of these patients were matched with a clinical trial
  • 37% of these patients had at least one actionable mutation in their tumor
  • Many patients’ sequencing results uncovered their cancer’s specific mutations, qualifying them for targeted treatments

Today, MSK researchers can look for cancer-causing alterations in 468 genes, and MSK is sequencing 600 to 800 patients monthly.

This is only the beginning, and with the help of donors like you, we can reach the next milestone.

This month, Cycle for Survival has launched the December Challenge – an initiative to raise $2 million by December 31 to purchase a DNA sequencer and fund genomic profiling. This technology is a game-changer, helping patients get the earliest and most precise treatment possible. Sequencing tumor DNA gives doctors the ability to not only develop more personalized treatments for patients, but also to increase the wealth of data and information to drive new and important investigations.

Here are some examples of the impact you are helping to fund:

Project GENIE, launched with the leadership of MSK’s Dr. Charles Sawyers, is an international data-sharing program, which enables institutions around the world to contribute sequencing data to a shared registry. By pooling insights, GENIE makes it easier for experts to study a large quantity of cancer-causing genetic mutations, which will ultimately inform treatment decisions. This unique collaboration is especially important for rare cancers.

Dr. David Solit, the director of the Kravis Center for Molecular Oncology at MSK, created the innovative Make-an-IMPACT initiative to provide patients with select rare cancers DNA sequencing at no cost. This brand new effort enhances MSK’s ability to discover the underlying genetic basis for rare cancers and helps match patients with clinical trials – regardless of which hospital they go to for treatment. This unprecedented initiative has been made possible largely by Cycle for Survival supporters.

The Cycle for Survival season begins next month! Bikes are over 90% full – sign up today and ride with us to beat rare cancers.
