Health In Harmony has been so grateful for your ongoing support through the COVID-19 pandemic. Though HIH recognizes that the pandemic remains ongoing, the medical teams in Indonesia, Madagascar, and Brazil have folded COVID-19 medical care and vaccines into routine healthcare procedures.

Over the past year, Health In Harmony has provided:

  • 1,000+ COVID-19 vaccinations in the Xingu Basin, Brazil
  • 1,100+ COVID-19 vaccinations through ASRI Medical Center in Indonesia
  • 1,500+ COVID-19 vaccinations in Manombo Rainforest, Madagascar

In Madagascar, over 70% of the local populations living in and around Manombo Rainforest have been vaccinated against COVID-19, as compared to 8% of the country's population as a whole. This is due in large part to the HIH Madagascar medical team's educational efforts to teach communities about the vaccine, as well as demonstrating the safety of vaccination.

In Brazil, HIH manages six medical expeditions per year, and each includes providing routine vaccinations to community members - now including COVID-19 vaccines and boosters.

In Indonesia, the ASRI Medical Center continues to provide routine healthcare services to patients with COVID-19, routes patients with severe symptoms to the hospital, and hosts vaccination education events.

It is thanks to your support that Health In Harmony was able to pivot healthcare teams so quickly to support rainforest communities in the wake of COVID-19. Teams will continue to provide high-quality, affordable healthcare for all, in rainforests across the world.

If you'd like to stay connected with us, please consider supporting HIH's two other GlobalGiving projects or connecting with us via the HIH website or social media.

THANK YOU!

Since the arrival of COVID-19 vaccinations in 2021, Health In Harmony's healthcare teams have worked hard to ensure vaccines are always accessible to the Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities we work alongside.

Part of this process includes general education about the importance of the COVID-19 vaccine. At Alam Sehat Lestari in West Kalimantan, Indonesia, the team has created various communications campaigns, in-clinic educational materials, and even a social media giveaway to increase public awareness for the vaccine. From January to July 2022, these educational measures resulted in ASRI providing:

  • 277 first doses
  • 426 second doses
  • 256 booster doses

In Madagascar, where COVID-19 vaccination rates are extremely low in the general population (around 8% of adults have received the vaccine), 70% of eligible adults in the communities HIH Madagascar serves have opted to get vaccinated! This contrast in numbers is likely due to vaccination education efforts as well as vaccine accessibility.

In the Terra do Meio region of Brazil, the SAMA Health In Harmony healthcare team worked to deliver vaccinations to communities living in harder to reach areas through both routine mobile clinic visits over the last two years. The team made special trips to mobile clinic locations several times to provide vaccination education and administer COVID-19 vaccines. Several individuals even received their vaccinations in the middle of the river as they encountered the team via boat! In total, SAMA Health In Harmony has provided over 1,200 COVID-19 vaccines to rainforest communities in the region from 2021-2022.

It is thanks to support from HIH's donors that the healthcare teams have been able to provide vaccination education and services to Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities who are regenerating rainforests around the world. Thank you!

Health In Harmony Brazil was recently featured in The Lancet! Award-winning journalist Jonathan Watts published a full-length feature on HIH's work in Brazil titled "Healing the Amazon." The article spotlights HIH Brazil's expeditions to bring dental and health care directly to Riverine Communities that do not have regular access to these services.

The provision of last-mile healthcare to these far-flung, difficult to reach communities helps supplement Brazil's public health system while also relieving financial pressures on these communities who have to leave their lands and travel to the cities to access medical care, which becomes very expensive for them and leaves their lands vulnerable to illegal loggers and gold miners.

"Where there are still trees standing in the Amazon is where there are still traditional peoples...If we give them what they want, they will look after the forest. If we provide health care to them in their homes, they won't need to go to the city so their presence can stop invasions of loggers or miners." - Marcelo Salazar, HIH Brazil Executive Coordinator

It is for the above reasons that Health In Harmony continues to provide COVID-19 vaccinations and emergency care to Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities living throughout the Terra do Meio region of Brazil. Healthy people can continue to support healthy forests and a healthier planet!

Thank you for your support.

Throughout 2021, Health In Harmony teams nimbly responded to the ongoing, and ever-changing, COVID-19 pandemic. We are continuing to provide this care today when waves hit rainforest communities living in Indonesia, Madagascar, and Brazil.

With the release of our 2021 Impact Report in celebration of Earth Month, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on all we accomplished last year, especially in regards to the pandemic emergency response measures we were able to implement with your support.

Health In Harmony teams have worked as first responders to support communities at the frontline of the climate and nature crisis in Indonesia, Madagascar, and Brazil. For each emergency, we conducted assessments and rapid Radical Listening exercises to ensure that the strategy and response prioritized existing community needs.

We have rapidly worked to meet the increasing demands COVID-19 has created by supplying medical equipment, vaccines, and economic stimulus programs. HIH teams have (and continue to) ensure communities have access to quality medical care while also working to prevent ecosystem damage as they struggle to cope with these disasters.

HIH also worked with other international nonprofits to advocate for the Biden administration and governments worldwide to think about comprehensive pandemic prevention that would work at the source to stop future pandemics from happening, rather than focusing investments on simply responding to COVID-19.

Key Facts and Figures from 2021:

  • 3,970 COVID-19 vaccinations were administered across all locations
  • 11,212 patient visits were conducted in Indonesia
  • 7,721 patient visits were conducted in Madagascar
  • 1,374 patient visits were conducted in Brazil
  • 60.5 hectares of climate-critical rainforest were reforested in Indonesia and Madagascar

The Health In Harmony response to COVID-19 in Indonesia, Madagascar, and Brazil is a planetary health response. This approach mitigates both the health effects of COVID-19 and the economic effects of collapsing livelihoods, while addressing the climate crisis.

None of this would be possible without your support. Thank you!

Since the pandemic began in 2020, Health In Harmony has worked to increasingly step up our level of care, thanks to generous supporters like you.

In the past few months, we have been able to provide medical teams in West Kalimantan, Indonesia with oxygen concentrators and tanks, conduct second dose vaccination expeditions in the Xingu River Basin in Brazil, as well as provide vaccinations to communities around the Manombo Forest in Madagascar. This care enables the Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities we work alongside to receive accessible, affordable healthcare and stay in their rainforest homes to continue protecting and regenerating the forests.

We are now facing the newest COVID-19 variant, Omicron, and are preparing all HIH medical teams in Indonesia, Madagascar, and Brazil to provide emergency medical services as needed, in addition to providing regularly scheduled check ups, vaccinations, and care.

Health In Harmony is working quickly to provide teams with new supplies to face the current threat including personal protective equipment (PPE) for medical staff, oxygen, masks for patients and community members, and ensuring transport is prepared for emergency cases.

Thank you for continuing to support Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities through this global pandemic.
