Since the arrival of COVID-19 vaccinations in 2021, Health In Harmony's healthcare teams have worked hard to ensure vaccines are always accessible to the Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities we work alongside.
Part of this process includes general education about the importance of the COVID-19 vaccine. At Alam Sehat Lestari in West Kalimantan, Indonesia, the team has created various communications campaigns, in-clinic educational materials, and even a social media giveaway to increase public awareness for the vaccine. From January to July 2022, these educational measures resulted in ASRI providing:
In Madagascar, where COVID-19 vaccination rates are extremely low in the general population (around 8% of adults have received the vaccine), 70% of eligible adults in the communities HIH Madagascar serves have opted to get vaccinated! This contrast in numbers is likely due to vaccination education efforts as well as vaccine accessibility.
In the Terra do Meio region of Brazil, the SAMA Health In Harmony healthcare team worked to deliver vaccinations to communities living in harder to reach areas through both routine mobile clinic visits over the last two years. The team made special trips to mobile clinic locations several times to provide vaccination education and administer COVID-19 vaccines. Several individuals even received their vaccinations in the middle of the river as they encountered the team via boat! In total, SAMA Health In Harmony has provided over 1,200 COVID-19 vaccines to rainforest communities in the region from 2021-2022.
It is thanks to support from HIH's donors that the healthcare teams have been able to provide vaccination education and services to Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities who are regenerating rainforests around the world. Thank you!
