Health In Harmony Brazil was recently featured in The Lancet! Award-winning journalist Jonathan Watts published a full-length feature on HIH's work in Brazil titled "Healing the Amazon." The article spotlights HIH Brazil's expeditions to bring dental and health care directly to Riverine Communities that do not have regular access to these services.
The provision of last-mile healthcare to these far-flung, difficult to reach communities helps supplement Brazil's public health system while also relieving financial pressures on these communities who have to leave their lands and travel to the cities to access medical care, which becomes very expensive for them and leaves their lands vulnerable to illegal loggers and gold miners.
"Where there are still trees standing in the Amazon is where there are still traditional peoples...If we give them what they want, they will look after the forest. If we provide health care to them in their homes, they won't need to go to the city so their presence can stop invasions of loggers or miners." - Marcelo Salazar, HIH Brazil Executive Coordinator
It is for the above reasons that Health In Harmony continues to provide COVID-19 vaccinations and emergency care to Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities living throughout the Terra do Meio region of Brazil. Healthy people can continue to support healthy forests and a healthier planet!
