PEACOCK CONSERVATORY INTERVENTIONS
PEACOCK EGGS CONSERVATION:
In our present project site, Thoothukudi our Indian National bird peacock are found as group in many roosting sites. In shrub thorny areas they are fertilized and lay eggs. Actually they lay eggs in the places where here is no protection. These are so many reasons for the disintegration of eggs. 1. Tribal children collect the eggs and eat them. 2. Animals also damage these eggs. 3. When the peafowl go to search food. Recently our peacock protection force (PPF) found a new problem in our site. Due to the climate variability, in Thoothukudi. Anthonyarpuram prosobis dense forests. Incessant manner, rain flood is occurred. For many days stagnant flood water is not dragged. That is why our Peacock protection force visited the site make an evaluation over there. It was a great shock that viewed the peafowl eggs were found with nest upon the water layer (Refer: Photo plate 1). If we have the mild to conserve the eggs, if we move further the peafowl will be disturbed and will not be incubated. Fortunately with the help of local panchayat water into the residents of the village were pumped eggs. In this situation our protection force informed to the situation to panchayat resident they were convinced and agreed to decrease the water level in forests (Refer: Photo plate 2). In the beginning they were hesitated to pump out the water in forest area. In the houses were affected, “why shall be spend the time, money, and energy in forest?” they asked so. By this conservating intervention two benefits were done. Many peafowl eggs were conserved. From the damage all the same time we have made the awareness, to the panchayat leaders to protect the National Bird and also keep in the Bio diversity in a fine manner.
PEACOCK TRAP:
This trap its utilized not only to catch peacocks, but also some other small wild animals, (mongoose and ant eaters). In this trap a hook is found, when a wild animal, comes to take the prey in thro hook, they are entangled in the trap / cage (Refer: Photo 3). The same trap is used to catch peacocks also. Poachers have the idea of getting peacocks, small wild animals by helping his trap during the night time in the thorny forests area. Our project team twice in a week went into the thorny forests. In this month the project team rode for 8 times. During the rode, they identified and removed the trap. This trap is found in the size of 4 feet length and 1.5 feet breadth. This trap is especially designed for peacocks, with the idea of being not damaged, the wings and feathers. In order to attract peacocks, they would spread some food grains (mainly maize) in all sides of trap.
EVIL EYE PROTECTOR / DRISTI GOMBE /MAL – EYE PROTECTIVES:
In the southern districts of TamilNadu, it is kept by Hindu Religions community, when they begun to construct the new houses, it is a strong belief among Hindu community. In the earlier days, they hanged “vegetable - pumpkin” or face picture of Giant / Monster. Now a days Hindus, keep the beautiful peacock statue in first of the new houses (Refer: Photo 4). As Dristi Gombe (Evil Eye Protector / Evil defender / Mal eye protective) through it is a myth, our project, team is promoting the policy. When they keep the images of peacocks, it shows the importance of conservations the peacock species and it reveals the relationship with the Gods & Goddess.
REVIVAL OF TRADITIONAL TECHNIQUES:
In South India most of the agricultural fields. Especially which are ready for harvest numerous indigenous and also migratory birds get down in the fields and caused much damage to the grains spikes.
“SCARE CROW”:
To avoid to this damage in some extend, here farmers traditionally, make some cross shaped bamboo is get into their field and it is covered completely with paddy hay and it will seemed like human body, at the top they will cover a clay pot as head, below the pot head, they will cover white shirt to avoid the arrival of birds. Due to this set up, birds will not arrive in this harvest field. This simple traditional techniques was adopted almost everywhere, This habit was vanished among the young farmers. That is why our global giving aided project team provided to form this “Hay dolls” as “scare crow”. Being seen this, human snapped form birds “including peacocks” will not approach the fields (Refer Photo 5). Our peacock protection force train the farmers, that we must not hunt the peacocks in any way, and to protect the harvest fields at the same time.
SIMPLE WHITE RIBBONS – AS SCARE CROW:
If the farmers feels hard to make this “scare crow” just he can planted a tall stick with broader white ribbon may be hanged when it flies, it will, make fear birds including peacocks (Refer: Photo 6).
