CONSERVATION OF NATIONAL BIRD, INDIA – FINAL REPORT
FORMATION OF PEACOCK PROTECTION FORCE:
At the blocks of Vilathikulam, Ottapidaram & Thoothukudi Peacocks poisoned death have been recorded. In these agricultural areas farmers have cultivated maize in their fields. In order to get the potential cultivation farmers soak the seeds in the copper sulphate solution. Then they dry the seeds and sow the seeds in their fields. In these agricultural fields many Peacocks come searching food and water. When they take these maize seeds they meet death. These death is occurred in 5 or 10 in numbers (Mass death) at a time. We are unable to control the farmers in these areas. Deaths of the Peacocks have been proven by the photographs taken by college students in these areas. Hence we decided to form the “Peacock protection force”(PPF) from the individual students of the Schools and Colleges. Peacock protection force was formed in various academic institutions as mentioned below:
Block : Ottapidaram, Vilathikulam & Thoothukudi. District : Thoothukudi
Major Activities:
RESPONSIBILITY AND DUTIES OF PEACOCK PROTECTION FORCE
AWARENESS CREATION EXHIBITION:
The GlobalGiving Aided Project Team, we ourselves formed a mobile exhibition for emphasizing the Peacock conservation. This would be the collection of small equipments which can be easily removed and fit again . It will be in the size of 10 x 15 feet. Our project team exhibits these articles in the Public Place of the agricultural village and every school (Children of the farmers studying schools) with in the exhibition we hanged 18 panel boards. Explanation about the Peacock conservation was explained in these boards such as:
Block: Ottapidaram, Vilathikulam & Thoothukudi. District: Thoothukudi
Explanations:
BRAIN STORM SESSION:
Farmer’s concentration and conservation of the National Bird Peacock only will not be enough. Agricultural officers, Environmentalists, NGO Heads, Farmers, Women Self Help Group members also students were gathered at their local places unanimously and Brain Storm Sessions were conducted for them. Everybody revealed their ideas towards the Conservation of the Indian National Bird Peacock. The whole group was divided into different groups. Every group was given various topics on conservation. Every group leaders presented their views and ideas. In the Brain Storm Session, following decisions were made:
THE SESSIONS WERE DIVIDED INTO TWO GROUPS FOR FOCUS GROUP DISCUSSION (FGD) THIS FGD RESULTS HERE AS FOLLOWS
REASONS FOR PEACOCKS MASS DEATH (First Group)
VARIOUS CONSERVATION STRATEGIES (Second Group)
AWARENESS GROUP STREET THEATRE (CULTURAL) PROGRAMME:
Mass death sites of Peacock are mainly agricultural villages. It would be better for them to convene an awareness programme through art & cultural group than the Awareness Training Programme because through the folk songs we can taught the Agricultural Community in the villages the conservatory methods of the peacock. Usually the artists who involve in the traditional methodology convene these programmes. In each village a programme was convened for duration of 3 hours.
Major scientific methodology on conservation of the peacock were simplified and taught in a simple manner. All musical instruments being used by the artisans are traditional instruments.
LOBBY WITH AGRI. / FOREST OFFICIALS FOR GRAINS DAMAGE COMPENSATION SUBSIDY:
In Thoothukudi – Madurai National High ways road, and Thoothukudi – Tirunelveli road (Southern Districts of Tamilnadu) from the roosting sites (bushes, shrubs, Dry Deciduous forests) Peacocks, come out and cross the National High ways road (NH) being sought to the water. Due to draught condition and also decrease of ground water potential in Southern districts of Tamilnadu, India. That is why Indian National bird comes into town areas and also crossing thro NH. As the forest area and the Agricultural lands are becoming the real Estate sites. Hence Peacocks come out seeking the new shelter for their sites, they cross NH. They meet numerous accidents. Because of the awareness made by Global Giving aided project Team and sticking of postures, Hand bills IEC (Information Education & Communication) Materials on many agricultural villages, as from as Peacock meet any accident, it come thro directly to our ears. When they meet minor accidents we mostly go to the spot, and take them with forest officials. In case of serious injury, before our arrival to the spot. That is why, at least conform the agricultural / Industrial community about the awareness and emergenc y of conserving our Indian National Bird.
Especially Ottapidaram Block, Peacocks enter into farmers field and destruct their farming activity. Farmers are already suffer much because of serious drought, and absence of rain fall. In this juncture, it is a great burden to them. Hence our GlobalGiving Aided Project Team talked with Agricultural officials and made arrangements for the green damage subsidy. So we worked various Agricultural and forest officials and gave petitions during our brain storm session.
AWARENESS THRO IEC (INFORMATION EDUCATION & COMMUNICATION) MATERIALS:
In our GlobalGiving aided projects we published and issued the stickers and pamphlets. This Information Education and communication (IEC) materials have been distributed by Global Giving Aided Project Team to all of project areas.
ACTIVITIES TO BE DONE:
We have chosen 3 types of various interventions for Global Giving Aided Project.
Capacity Building – Seven Done Completed
Alternative Livelihood training for poachers – One Yet to be done
Creation of small National habitant in wasting sites – One Yet to be done.
In our GlobalGiving project, 9 activities were suggested we have accomplished major 7 activities, but two above activities are not performed for this one year project.
