PROJECT TITLE: CONSERVATION OF NATIONAL BIRD, INDIA

SUBJECT OF REPORT: INAUGURATION AND CONTINUOUS PROGRAMS

PROJECT REPORTING PERIOD: 20.10.15 TO 31.10.15

This project is financially donated by the Global Giving through Chevalier Roche society is Online donation. The present project target site is Thoothukudi District, TamilNadu State. In Ottapidaram block of Thoothukudi district peacocks are hunted, poisoned and killed larger in number. Particularly on 9/10/2015 at Venkateswarapuram village in Duraisamypuram, Panchayat union at a farmer named Mr. Asirvathams place six peacocks were found dead. Therefore there for the boys and girls students of Schools in that village Awareness Programme regarding peacocks protection & exhibition were convened.

DURAISAMYPURAM PANCHAYAT UNION:

            Duraisamypuram panchayat union is located at the distance of 7kms from the block Head quarters Ottapidaram. In these areas being located near the pasuvanthanai panchayat union 6 numbers of peacocks are died. There most of the farmers are cultivating Maize. They sow the poisoned seeds in their agricultural lands. Peacocks eat them and die frequently. It is considered as a dangerous area for peacocks.

VENKATESWARAPURAM VILLAGE:

            This village is located in Duraisamypuram panchayat union of Ottapidaram Block. Venkateswarapuram village is situated at the distance of about 2.5 km form Keelamudiman panchayat union. The mass death was identified by their forest officials and our project team through college students. After that forest Dept. officials came over there, collected the dead peacocks and were sent to Chennai for post-mortem.

 

AWARENESS SEMINAR PROGRAMME:

            It was decided to convene the camp at the village named pasuvanthanai. On 2/11/2015 at Govt. Hr. School, Pasuvanthanai which is away from the distance of 5km from the vulnerable target site where incident happened. Awareness seminar was convened and on 3/11/2015 peacock protection Awareness Exhibition also was held. On the first day of the programme awareness seminar programme was begun by National Green Corp. (NGC) Incharge Mr. N. Durairaj Govt. Hr. Sec. School, Pasuvanthanai. Senior Science Teacher Mrs. R. Esther presided over this programme in the presence of Dr. J. Tagore Derose, Chevalier Roche Society and Mrs. M. Arul Malar, English Teacher. Mr. C. Nellai Nayagam, Forest Ranger, Govt. of TamilNadu, Thoothukudi participated in this programme as the chief guest and offered an Chief Guest Address on peacock conservation.

            All over the Thoothukudi district, Peacock population is prevalent. In Ottapidaram and Vilathikulam Blocks, peacocks are frequently death. Even though so many reasons are uttered, most of the mass death are in Agricultural field.

Latest mass death:

            During 9th October 2015, 6 peacocks were found mass death in Venkateswarapuram village (Duraisamypuram panchayat) Agricultural lands. Even though so many reasons are found, it has to be prevented soon.

Method of Found:

            During this mass death college students of Nagampatti. Manonmaniam Sundaranar University College were passing throughout the way. Being found the mass death of peacock, they got stocked, and took pictures in mobile and sent the same to our agency and also press thro “Whats app”. As soon as knew this information, we took immediate action.

Present target site:

            As this mass death is happened recently at Venkateswarapuram village planned to convene our present project in this Block & Village.

Target group:

            Being committed with Govt. of TamilNadu, Dept. of forest officials our Global Giving project team, identified thro Target vulnerable target group.

  1. Agricultural farmers nearby
  2. Students (School / college from Agricultural families)

 

Four types of Awareness programmes were convened for continuous two days camp

  1. Awareness seminar
  2. Awareness Exhibition
  3. Group discussion
  4. Conservation Quiz

Awareness Exhibition:

            A shed in the size of 10 x 12 feet which can be easily removing and setting again. For this purpose permanently our project team arranged vehicle. We have planned to run this mobile exhibition in the above vulnerable targeted sites to Agricultural farmers / students (from Agricultural community)

            The plannel Board being kept in Exhibition and the points here mentioned.

Group Discussion followed Quiz:

            Forest Ranger Mr. Nellai Nayagam with our NGO-CRS project director Dr. J. Tagore Derose, our Global Giving aided project manager Mr. A. Thamodaran & W. Armstrong with our staff team participated in group discussion.

  1. Students clarified the conservatory facts which were found in the Exhibition.
  2. Particularly special attention was given to Taxonomical identification, pavo cristatus.

It was explain about the correlation between mass death and Eco system imbalanced, food cycle, food web and Bio diversity.

Conservation Quiz:

Being continued this session, Forest officer convened Bio diversity Quiz for the students gathered here. Being dedicated their personal time 2 hours by all Teachers and students after at school for over. It showed their serious commitment.

Peacock Force:

In this school already, National Green Corps. (NGC) already running over there. Their volunteers concentrate in tree plantation. In this occasion we formed the peacock protection force over there. This volunteer force around that, they would be keen to avoid such mass death in the ensuing days also it was informed, they would be helpful early identification of mass death.

Place: North Thalaiyoothu (Near Gandaikondan sipcot campus), Tirunelveli

When peacock migrated from their habitat to a newer area, by coming National Highway (NH). It met an accident of crashing of unknown vehicle. Villager informed to our resue team. When we reached immediately, we provided to first aid treatment. But unfortunately it died.
