Dear Friends ,
We are glad to present another success story of a participant of this program.
Sumitra ( name changed) story is a very good example of how knowledge & skills can bring change not only in personality but also in the life of a person. Sumitra comes from a very orthodox family from Karnataka. Though educated till 10 Std she had very less opportunity due to responsibilities of 3 daughters after her marriage. Due to transfer in job of her husband, family had to shift to Pune in Maharashtra state. The real problems started then, Sumitra, who could only read , write or understand Kannada started facing difficulty in communication & started feeling low in confidence. The three girls were growing up & the expenses need to be tackled. A small engineering workshop was started by Sumitra’s husband. Sumitra though struggling with language problem made some friends while staying in her new house . These two friends (Bharati & Shilpa) helped her learn & understand Marathi language. She also completed her basic tailoring course at IDEA’s vocational training centre & joined them in their group enterprise work. Meanwhile her husband’s engineering business was doing well & required a helping hand and therefore she was asked to give some time at the workshop. Sumitra however was finding it worthless as she could not be of much help due to her limitation in knowledge of any kind of work. This became the turning point of her life . Hearing about the computer course in Digital literacy at IDEA’s vocational centre through the brochures, Sumitra approached the centre. She met the social worker & the instructors there who helped her in understanding the importance of being digitally literate. Finding it interesting & useful she completed the Digital literacy course.
It was interesting & encouraging to hear it from Sumitra when she was talking with confidence that she has gained after the class. She is now helping her husband in keeping records of goods & material in using excel sheet in computer. She is now drafting & answering emails, making challan’s & keeping accounts of the workshop.
She thanked the instructor Ms. Sarika who went out of the way & taught her additional topics with patience until she became thorough in it. At the same time she does not miss to thank her friends also who stood up to her & kept her motivated for achieving all this. Sumita says-‘ the 21 year of marriage of living with a guilt in mind not helping my husband to run the home has gone & now I feel happy to be a contributing member in running our family’.
IDEA strives to bring such changes in all the participants under our women empowerment programmes
