Computer skill, a basic necessity now

Happy New year !
May the new year bring good news and happiness to everyone!

The coronavirus crisis-induced a new normalcy in our education 
system as well as in our lives. Though the initial response to 
virtual learning wasn't very positive, we had to reinvent our 
interventions in the grassroot level with our limited logistics 
and resources to make things easier for our students to continue 
learnig in this pandemic. 
We had started our computer literacy programs for girls and women 
from the underprevileged communities as an additional skill for 
employment.In the initial phase we had spent a lot of time and 
energy convincing our women beneficiaries to join our courses in 
our NDLM centres. Now we are glad to see that many of our 
students and their family members are able to manage their life 
with the knowledge and computer skills they have learned from 
these classes.
All our other innovative forms of empowering programs also need 
computer skill as a basic necessity because of the coronavirus 
crisis-induced lock down. Infact everyone needs computer skills 
now, so we are conducting basic computer skill classes online 
for all our women beneficiaries in our skill developement 
programs as well as for children in our educational support 
programs. Our study centre children can use computers with ease 
now. All our programs are running on virtual platforms and our 
women beneficiaries who have only basic school education are using 
their smart phones to attend our online classes with confidence.
In addition to regular classes we are also conducting life skill
 sessions and motivational programs online. 
Many of the women beneficiaries have started taking orders online 
for their products and services. We are proud to see that our hard work is
being paid off.
This is possible only because of donors like you who have trusted us
 when we atarted this computer literacy programs years back and supported
 us so far. We as an NGO can continue our work only through your generous support ,
 please contine to support us as we struggle to manage our programs during this pandemic.

It is reaping time..

Dear Donors,

Warm greetings from IDEA Foundation...

Computer literacy has become an integral part of our lives now...Our beneficiaries were well prepared for this day..Thanks to all of you who made it possible for them to manage the crisis in this difficult phase of our life.

IDEA had started computer literacy programs for women with a vision to equip them with a skill which can make them employable. We have trained thousands of women from poor educational and financial background. We never expected that one day our life will become so dependent on computers. We are glad to see that these women are using their computer knowledge in managing day to day life in lock down, by sharing their knowledge with their families and also as an important pillar of support to their children to continue education online.

We are giving training on how to use different apps for our current needs. We have conducted sessions on how to use Google meet and Zoom. We have also provided information on cyber security and the importance of taking care when children are using internet. Every day new apps and technologies are coming up, we try our best to keep our beneficiaries updated to make their life easier in this pandemic. Our social workers are dedicated and available to them always to clarify their doubts and help them

Yes, at least they are not so helpless. They know how to reach out for support and to make use of the available resources provided for them by the government as well.

IDEA while continuing with online platforms, gives training to new students through the available resources. These women who were already trained in their communities are of great help to new students. However, IDEA computer centres remain closed due to the nature of spread of the infection and the strict lock down regulations imposed in the state of Maharashtra as a preventive response to curtail the rapid community spread of the virus.

DIGITAL SKILLS PUT TO GOOD USE DURING LOCKDOWN!

Greetings from IDEA!

We are so grateful for your continued contribution to this project! Because of your contribution, we could conduct digital literacy classes for hundreds of underprivileged girls in India. In these classes, girls who had not even seen a computer have learned basics of computer, they have learned how to use applications like MS Word, MS Paint etc. They have been taught how to use the internet, how to search for information on the internet, they have also learned how to operate a smartphone, make video calls, and pay bills online.

Due to the spread of Coronavirus in March, we had to stop our field operations and regular digital literacy classes as the lockdown was announced in the country. Since we run many educational and skilling initiatives at different locations in India, we were a little apprehensive about how these initiatives would translate if we took them online. But our digital literacy class girls surprised us!

We began by connecting to them through WhatsApp. Our digital literacy instructors shared many small tutorials on the group. How to create email accounts – step by step guide, How to make a video call, how to connect to a group through video conferring and conference-calls, how to shoot and save videos etc. These tutorials were designed keeping in mind the need for these skills during the lockdown.

The girls were really happy to learn these skills as they proved to be very handy during this isolation period. They were happy to send us screenshots of their video conferences and conference calls. Some ladies from the digital literacy class are also students of our Home chefs cooking and catering course. These ladies went a step further and combined the learnings of the two courses!

Their instructor suggested that since they are also such good cooks, we should hold a cooking competition online in which all participants shot videos of them preparing the dish and then uploaded on the group. A Poll was conducted and the best dish prizes were announced. Even though one couldn’t taste the dishes, this activity - a combination of culinary and digital skills - was enjoyed by all.

Young girls from the digital literacy class are making awareness videos and photo collages while many girls are using their free time searching for information and learning from videos. Since they can even pay bills online, the girls are very happy that they got an opportunity to learn these very important digital skills in time before the lockdown.
