We're gearing up for Coolest Projects 2021!

Coolest Projects 2021 will take place online
Coolest Projects 2021 will take place online

Dear Friend,

I hope this message finds you well.

Technology is changing our world, and we believe that every young person deserves the chance to shape this. Generous donors like you make this possible.

Since our last update to you, in addition to supporting CoderDojos who are delivering activities online, we have been gearing up to engage Ninjas everywhere to participate in our biggest flagship technology event yet - Coolest Projects 2021!

Coolest Projects

We are so excited to announce that our annual technology fair - Coolest Projects - will be online in 2021, and bigger than ever! We know that Coolest Projects is a great motivator for young people (Ninjas) and is a place for Ninjas to showcase their awesome digital creations. We’ve been supporting CoderDojos across the world to help their Ninjas register their projects, so that their cool creations will be showcased all over the world.

To support clubs and young people to get started with their projects, we have been running workshops on ‘How to design projects with young people’. These workshops cover example projects, outline the planning and design process and show how clubs can use Coolest Projects to motivate and engage young people who are joining remotely.

We have also been sharing stories about creator’s projects in different countries to inspire more young people to start making! For example, we shared a story about Bhakti who created this amazing ‘Save the Animals’ game in our 2020 showcase.

We have also been busy myth-busting about Coolest Projects misconceptions so encourage more young people to take part.

International Womens’ Day

To motivate Ninjas we have also been shining a light on the amazing women who work in computer science for International Women’s Day.

We shared the story of Nikole Vaughn, who is the champion of CoderDojo Collaborative in San Antonio, Texas. We caught up with her to hear about what being part of the CoderDojo community means, and how she wants to inspire the next generation of female coders.

Coding from home

Our clubs team have been working hard to deliver ongoing workshops and provide resources to celebrate the CoderDojo community who are delivering activities online. These include sessions on how to run an online Dojo safely and top tips for running engaging activities. We’re also running sessions on ‘how to help young people progress with using Scratch’. We continue to have great engagement in these workshops, which also provide a space for volunteers to connect and share learnings.

To reach more young people directly from home, we’ve also been continuing to run our Digital Making at Home live stream. On Pi Day this year (March 14th) we ran a live stream with special guest Eben Upton - creator of the Raspberry Pi and co-founder of the Raspberry Pi Foundation - and introduced Coolest Projects to inspire makers everywhere.

We look forward to telling you all about our Coolest Projects event in our next update. For now, thanks for helping us to keep our CoderDojo community coding!

Wishing you all the best,

Bryony
