Clean Water - The blessing of local suppliers
By Trey Starnes | Executive Director
The past few months in Haiti presented increasing difficulty as the unrest in Port-au-Prince, and the surrounding area continues to grow and expand. Safety and security are a greater concern daily, and supply lines and availability of goods strain further each day. We are grateful in this season that our water supplier is local to our region and continues delivering water promptly. Water prices follow inflation, and our costs trend upward, but we've secured quality drinking water consistently.
Our conservation measures and infrastructure improvements mentioned in the last report are paying dividends in water waste prevention. We provide for our children and staff and can minimize nearly all waste. As we await solutions to our situation, we are grateful to God and our donors faithfulness to provide access to necessities.

A constant challenge at GLA is potable water. GLA buys in water trucks for all the water used in the facility; for some purposes, we use water trucks. For drinking water, we source from a different location. Nonetheless, water is an expensive, time-consuming necessity. We are constantly working to improve water retention and consumption rates. We’ve faced several challenges with our water containment that have grown increasingly worse.
Over the past couple of months, we’ve undertaken some plumbing and septic overhauls. Staff and contracted plumbers installed and repaired rooftop water storage tanks to make access easier for the nannies of our Children’s Village. We also did an investigation of septic problems and large amounts of fresh water loss. Plumbers discovered that nearly all of our fixtures in each house were leaking. This prompted the replacement of all sinks and toilets in the kids' rooms. We’ve seen our fresh water levels holding much steadier and the resulting septic challenges decrease with much less fresh water constantly filling the tank.
One final task was to complete and cap our newest septic tank for a new part of our facility. The drain lines have been connected and the masonry work for the cap is completed; all that remains is to reset the paver stones back over the area.

We are making new moves and it is for the better. GLA is a home to a fluctuating number of children. Where we do our best so the children can thrive in a safe environment. We are currently relocating our NICU but that is not the only new move that we are making. We are also making repairs to provide a better home environment for our children. This is why we have a Fix the Fort Campaign which entails the relocation of the NICU,Children’s playground repairs, Septic system overhaul, electricity/power overhaul,Vehicle repairs & replacement, kids cubbies for their houses.
Issues with a septic system can create huge problems in a short amount of time. Contaminated waste can seep water into and on top of the ground creating a risk of illness and unsanitary conditions. One of the septic systems at GLA is currently experiencing issues, creating water waste and unsafe conditions near our children’s play area. GLA urgently needs to bring in a septic company to identify and correct the issue in order to continue to provide a safe and healthy area for our children, staff, and volunteers moving forward. These are all the areas that we need your support. Please go to our website to actively join our GLA team.
