Provide Clean Water for 55+ Children in Haiti

We all know how important water is. Though we do our best to conserve water at GLA, we need a lot to adequately care for our infants and children. We use water to drink, water to shower, water to clean, and water to cook. Water is as important as oxygen.

An article written by the European Federation of Bottled Water stated that, “Water is an essential nutrient and plays a key role in the human body. We can survive up to several weeks without food, but only a few days without water. Every system in the body, from cells and tissues, to vital organs requires water to function.

Did you know that?

• Water carries nutrients to all cells in our body and oxygen to our brain
• Water allows the body to absorb and assimilate minerals, vitamins, amino acids, glucose and other substances
• Water flushes out toxins and waste
• Water helps to regulate body temperature 
• Water acts as a lubricant for joints and muscles

Water makes up on average 60% of an adult’s body weight, from 31 % in bones to 83% in lungs. This is why water is as important as oxygen. Everybody needs water to have a healthy and better life.”

In a third world country like Haiti, something as basic as clean water is not the easiest and cheapest thing to get. We want to say “Thank you, so very much,” to the people that help us by donating to our “Providing Clean Water Project”. The children at GLA are able to thrive because you care. Haiti is not like the United States where the government can provide or guarantee the use of essential services to their citizens. The world knows that Haiti is one of the poorest countries of the world. All of the essential services that the government is supposed to provide like water, electricity, first response, ambulance and firefighters are not always available. It depends on the country’s situation and even when it’s doing okay many needs are not met.

This year has been tough for everyone in Haiti because of the situation with the leadership of the country. We were on lockdown for over three months. It had negative effects on all of us. We got less and less electricity (EDH). We got less and less water from “DINEPA” the institution that gives water to some places in Haiti. It is very limited because the water that they provide is to do basic things like washing clothes or dishes. The water is not drinkable and they can only send it out to a few places in the country. That is why most people buy water trucks and buy many water gallons that contain purified water to drink.

In Haiti, many organizations and even just families have water storage systems at their homes called CISTERNS.  This is way to collect and store rain water. If we do not receive enough rain, then it holds water that we buy in truckloads. These cement tanks called cisterns can hold as much as 100,000 gallons of water!  The ones are GLA are not quite that big but we have several tanks situated throughout the mission.  Most of the cisterns are connected so that water can be moved from one place to another as the need for water changes.

Since God’s Littlest Angels is up in the mountain in Fort Jacques. It is very hard for us to get electricity and water. We always like it when it’s a rainy season, so we can store water for further usage but atlas it is not enough. We have to buy trucks of water. Gallons of purified water for our children to drink.
