SCOEN operates a Child Development Centre aimed at providing education, care, and support to 180 vulnerable children in rural Uganda, including orphans and children affected by sickle cell, HIV/AIDS, and conflict. The project also runs a sponsorship program that enables children from the poorest families to attend school, breaking the cycle of poverty through education.
Challenges
The cost of attending school in Uganda has risen significantly, driven by an ongoing economic recession. For many families, school fees remain the single greatest barrier to completing basic education.
Past Quarter Activities (January – March 2026)
During this quarter, the project was able to fund school fees for only 17 children. This falls well short of the 23 children currently enrolled in the pre-primary program and the broader target of supporting 40 sponsored children.
Challenges faced this quarter:
Financial Outlook
The total annual cost to sponsor one child through school in Uganda is approximately $480 USD ($40 per month). This covers school fees, uniforms, books, supplies, and medical care as needed. For the 23 currently enrolled children, a total of $1,278 USD is required per term to cover full school fees and scholastic requirements. The project's overall fundraising goal on GlobalGiving is $156,350, with only $6,386 raised to date, leaving a significant gap to be filled.
Request for Support
To resume full operations and expand the sponsorship program, SCOEN urgently seeks funding to cover:
