Foster the Funk - February 11th

Our Holiday Party last month was a huge success! With over 50 campers in attendance, the holiday cheer was overwhelming! Campers, volunteers, and guests enjoyed holiday crafts, face painting, games, sweet treats, a delicious meal, and a visit from Santa! A video with photos from the party are posted on our Facebook page.

We are now busy planning a fundraiser scheduled for Saturday, February 11th. Please mark your calendars now for the upcoming “Foster the Funk” event. We want to take you to Funky Town! Come join us for a night filled with rad '80s music, good food, a cash bar, silent auction, and raffle…all to support Atlanta’s foster youth! To purchase tickets, please go to Foster the Funk Tickets

On behalf of our campers, thank you for your continued support!

Dear Friends of Camp Horizon:

This past weekend, we dusted off our bikes, inflated our tires, and rode in the 11th Annual Spin for Kids! Camp Twin Lakes hosts this bike race every year, and Camp Horizon was able to raise just over $8,000, which goes directly to help cover the camp facility fees at Camp Twin Lakes for our year-round mentoring programs. We appreciate all of our cyclists, and those who supported them with pledges, and give a special thanks to our dedicated long-time volunteer John Ramsaur who was our Team Captain. Click here to view our Camp Horizon Team Page.

We are busy preparing for our next Leadership Development Program (LDP) weekend retreat. We are looking for counselors to spend the weekend with our amazing teen campers. Please consider joining us for a weekend of fun, November 11-13, 2016, at Camp Twin Lakes Will-A-Way in Winder, Ga. We will be heading out to camp early evening on Friday and returning home Sunday afternoon. To volunteer, please click here for the application and submit it by October 21st!

On behalf of our campers, thank you for your continued support!

What a fun-filled and meaningful summer it has been for Camp Horizon! This weekend, we kick off our Summer Camp 2016 for children in foster care ages 8-11. Last week, we had an exciting river paddling adventure for our teens. Last month, our teen campers had incredible experiences visiting the Porsche Experience Center Atlanta and the Circus Arts Institute!

For last week’s river adventure, Camp Horizon's teen campers got to paddle rivers for over 100 miles! Partnering with “Paddle Georgia, A Project of Georgia River Network,” each of our teen campers received a scholarship to attend the Paddle GA Youth Program (PGYP) thanks to grants and generous donations of caring individuals like YOU!

During the weeklong paddling trip, they held the ‘three Rs’ of Camp Horizon, Respect, responsibility, and resilience, in high regards. After paddling all day, each evening was spent with self-esteem and reflection activities, journaling, and games like "Wacky Olympics," canoe tug of war and lots of dancing! There was also a lot of animal sightings; including cows, snakes, and turtles!

Our teen leadership events provide our teens with new opportunities for growth and valuable life skills lessons. We are extremely proud of everything they have accomplished! Now, we are off to make final preparations to welcome our youngest participants to our 34th year of Summer Camp!

Summer Camp 2016 is quickly approaching! Our staff is hard at work planning the week and recruiting volunteers. Camp Horizon provides a unique experience for our foster youth by matching each child with his/her own volunteer mentor counselor. For every 40 foster youth we bring to camp, we have 40 trained and compassionate counselors ready to guide them through an amazing week of growth and self-discovery. We are dedicated to this 1:1 mentor match program because during the past 34 years, we've seen the impact personalized and focused attention can have on a child who has suffered trauma. With at least one committed and caring adult, these children begin to see the world in a new way. We show them that they have a voice and they are important, and in time, they believe it. Our hope is that we are breaking the cycle of abuse and that we're instilling a sense of self worth in children who are often forgotten.

Josh Shipp, a former foster youth, explains these important connections in this video: ONE Caring Adult

Staying connected with our foster youth is crucial to maintaining positive connections, so our services don't end when camp is over. We provide year-round events that are free to our participants, and include a mix of fun and educational experiences. In December, we hosted our annual holiday party that included a traditional holiday meal, games, crafts, and a special visit from Santa! Each child received a new outfit, toy, fleece jacket, hat and gloves.

In February, our campers and volunteers reconnected for a day of bowling at Brunswick Zone. Our bowling scores may not have been very high that day, but the love and energy was through the roof!

Thank you for supporting the important work we do for Atlanta's foster youth. We're working to make a positive difference, and with your support, we're doing it TOGETHER
