Thank you to everyone who continues to support Camp Horizon through GlobalGiving and other avenues, as well as those who attended Camp Horizon's Party on Purpose (P.O.P.) this month. With your support and generosity, we were able to raise $25,500! This money will help fund our 2016 programs for the foster youth of Atlanta.

It was a wonderful evening of premium wine, craft beer, fabulous food, live music, and silent auction items consisting of artwork, jewelry, dining certificates, signed sports and celebrity memorabilia, and lots, lots more!

Some photos from the event are attached below. For more photos, check out our page at www.Facebook.com/CampHorizon

Sincere thanks,

The Camp Horizon Team

Bus Arrival: They feel special from the start!
Bus Arrival: They feel special from the start!

This is just a friendly reminder that TODAY is THE DAY when every donation of $1,000 or less will be matched by a 40% donation from Global Giving. The deadline is midnight tonight! Please click here to make your tax-deductible contribution.

We need YOUR support to continue our success in changing lives. “Children and adolescents with foster care experience are diagnosed with PTSD at twice the rate of US war veterans.”  Our no-cost mentoring programs, with early intervention in a supportive environment, provide special healing. We ARE making a difference! Our campers continue to grow and flourish despite the adversity they face. The statistics on education alone show that 82% of foster youth involved with Camp Horizon programs graduate from high school, compared to 46% nationwide. Furthermore, 64% of our former campers enroll in college, compared to 20% of foster youth nationwide.

We are holding up to our mission of working to restore dignity and hope to children, teens and young adults who have been abused and neglected - empowering them to make good decisions and lead healthy, productive lives. Since 1982, Camp Horizon has helped campers believe they are children of promise.

Thank you for your continued support of Camp Horizon, our staff, our volunteers and most importantly our campers!

ONE DAY ONLY - 40% DONATION MATCHING, JULY 15th.

Camp Horizon just marked our 33rd year of summer camp restoring dignity and hope to Atlanta's youth in foster care. We’d like to give special thanks to the volunteers and donors who made this life-changing week possible. Our board and staff of camp counselors are all volunteers, which allows the money that we raise to go directly to the needs of the children. In fact, last year, we had over 250 volunteers who served more than 10,000 hours. If you cannot give your time, please consider giving financial support.

Tomorrow is the largest Bonus Day of the year! Beginning at 9AM, each donation of $1,000 or less will be matched by a 40% donation from Global Giving. We'll send a reminder tomorrow morning! Camp Horizon was recognized as a 2014 Top-Rated Nonprofit by the Great Nonprofits organization. Read our reviews here.

While summer camp was fun, and filled with memorable "firsts" for our campers, our intentional programs give them skills that last beyond their time with us. A child psychologist has stated that one week at Camp Horizon equates to a year’s worth of therapy for these children. We stay connected with our campers with year-round programs, providing stability and consistency. They will take what they have received from Camp Horizon and grow it into a powerful agent for social change, in breaking the cycle of abuse, bringing meaning to our motto: A New Day, a Better Day is on the Horizon!

Summer Camp -- Camper Welcome
Summer Camp -- Camper Welcome

Summer Camp 2015 is just around the corner (July 4-10), so we’re finalizing all of our beach themed details and packing our moving truck full of camp supplies. This will be our 33rd summer serving Atlanta’s youth in foster care, and we couldn’t have made it this far without friends and supporters like YOU.

In April, we spent a weekend at Rock Eagle 4-H Center with our teen Leadership Development Program. The weekend focused on RESILIENCE, one of our Three R’s (Respect, Responsibility and Resilience). We facilitated lessons on this core value with goal setting, guest speakers, group discussions, and stress relief activities. It was a rainy weekend, but during a break in the clouds, were were able to take a group hike to see the amazing Native American Rock Eagle stone effigy.

Our May wine and beer tasting fundraiser, Sips for Summer Camp, raised more than $8,000! It was a beautiful night with delicious food, craft beer and premium wine. Thank you for supporting our campers!

When Camp Horizon began, providing support for Atlanta’s foster youth was our major goal, but the description of “family” came directly from our campers. Each spring, we honor our campers, our loyal volunteers, and their tight knit bonds with our Family Reunion. This year’s reunion was held at Stone Mountain Park! We enjoyed lunch, the sky hike, train rides, and other adventurous activities. We also honored our graduating seniors and presented scholarship awards to applicants headed to college or other post-secondary institutions.

Mark your calendars for our next Global Giving donation match day, Wednesday, July 15th, shortly after we return home from camp. Please consider supporting our work by making a donation that day, and Global Giving will provide a 40% matching gift for donations up to $1,000. Please support our campers AND make your donation stretch. We’ll send more information as the matching day gets closer!

Thank YOU for your support and for making our mission possible!

As Spring has finally sprung in the metro Atlanta area, we are already well underway in preparation for this year's Beach Themed Summer Camp 2015, starting July 4th!

Meanwhile, all those behind the scenes activities are happening too.  This year we've welcomed many new faces to our strong Board of Directors team, and we're checking off our list of strategic goals to facilitate growth and partnerships. Much of our success in new recruitment this year is thanks to a new LinkedIn Partnership through their Volunteer Marketplace, which is a new and free service to a small charity like ours!  This was a game-changer for us!

With our focused team, we've recently unveild our "new look" with our now 21st century website!  We're very proud of the way it's turned out and for all the collaboration and work that went into it, although, no website project is ever complete. This iteration represents only "phase 1" with several more additions in the works.

Last month's outting brought our campers of all ages to Escalade Rock Climbing Gym for some personal and group challenges. It's this kind of contininuity that proves to our campers that they are important and that we're a stable presence for them as they grow and mature. For many of our campers, Camp Horizon is the only stable thing in their lives.

We know that consistency and genuine support, like that provided through our year-round programs, help to offset some of the negative aspects that a history of abuse and neglect confer. But there are lifetime effects that develop and hinder a child's emotional, mental, and physical health too. You can check out Dr. Nadine Burke Harris's TED Talk to hear her explain how stress negatively affects a child's development. Children who suffer abuse and neglect, who've suffered a trauma, are different than other children. Their brains and neurological systems learn to respond differently to stress, for instance. Keeping this in mind, we at Camp Horizon feel even more emboldened in our mission to bring love, respect, and nuturing guidance to kids who need it most, making a lifetime's difference, slowly, one child at a time.

As I look at my calendar, we've got our next Leadership Development Program teen retreat coming up in April, a casual and spunky fundraiser in May, our annual "Famly Reunion" for all alumni campers, volunteers, staff, and donors, and of course, our Summer Camp week kick-off on July 4th! (I can't wait!)

Thank you for your support and commitment to our Camp Horizon campers, a group who started out in life with the deck stacked very much against them.  With our continued investment in their futures, we aim to imrpove their potential for success and even -- it's a lofty goal -- help mitigate or even prevent some long-term mental, psychological and physical problems.

YOU help to make the magic possible!
