Last month forty-three brave little campers joined us at Camp Twin Lakes for Camp Horizon Luau 2019. Summer camp is the base of what we do. It's how our eight-year-old campers are introduced to the Camp Horizon family and often the entry point for new volunteers and staff. This year, with more campers than ever before, our volunteers welcomed children with open arms and devoted hearts- spending 24 hours a day with their camper and being there for every challenge, success, laugh, tear, and spontaneous dance party. Camp Horizon's one-to-one camper to counselor ratio ensures that each camper receives focused attention and support as we learn about the three R's: respect, responsibility, resilience. All of this is possible because of donors like you! Thank you for supporting a week of transformation and love. We are incredibly appreciative of your continued support!

ROSEA'S SUCCESS STORY

Our Camp Horizon family is often rewarded by seeing our campers grow up to make positive decisions and lead happy, healthy lives. Witnessing campers graduate high school, join the military, enroll in college or trade school, or start their career are achievements that are celebrated and offer a moment of reflection on that individual

camper's journey. Rosea is one of Camp Horizon’s success stories, joining our family over ten years ago during summer camp. A cautious 8-year-old during her first summer, Rosea’s counselor, Tara, provided the empathy and encouragement that allowed her to come out of her shell. Initial feelings of discomfort and distrust of her new surroundings slowly eroded throughout the week, earned through a sense of security formed through constant supervision, fun programming, and a safe environment where basic needs were never in question. Over time, Rosea did not feel embarrassed about being in foster care due to Camp Horizon’s accepting environment, eventually realizing that many other campers (and even some volunteers) shared similar experiences involving case workers, moving to different homes, or not being with their parents.

As Rosea grew older, she benefitted from Camp Horizon’s Leadership Development Program for teenagers. Designed to give the campers more independence, LDP exists within a group setting for discussion and goal-making within similar-aged peer groups. With plenty of adult supervision, the participants of LDP worked together to discover options to difficult teen situations and enthusiastically plan for their futures. At LDP, the campers were able to develop new strategies for navigating life, all with the unfailing support of the Camp Horizon family. Unlike 90% of GA teens foster care, (GA Dept. of Education 2011) Rosea graduated from high school right on time.

Now a mother to her son Braylon, Rosea is already implementing Camp Horizon’s “3 R’s” of Respect, Responsibility, and Resilience in her role as a parent. It is with great personal pride that Rosea declares, “Braylon will never experience Camp Horizon programming as a camper... but because I am his mother, I will make certain that he benefits from all the love I got from my camp family.”

Thank you so much for your generous donation to Camp Horizon. Every dollar helps fulfill our mission as we work to restore dignity and hope to children, teens, and young adults in foster care who have been abused and neglected – empowering them to make good decisions and lead healthy, productive lives.

In the month of October, we put our mission into action during our Leadership Development Program (LDP). LDP is a weekend of programming for our teen campers where we focus on leadership skills, building strong relationships, and planning for the future while continuing our emphasis on Camp Horizon’s 3 R’s: Respect, Responsibility, and Resilience. Campers enjoy the activities, but the highlight of the weekend is always reuniting with friends and counselors they grew to know over the years at summer camp.

As December nears, we prepare for the festivities of the holiday season. In the fall, we ask our campers to provide a wish list of what they would like to receive for the holidays. Through donations and an amazing sponsor, we are able to provide our campers with both practical items such as clothing and supplies for school, as well as something of off their wish list. Once items are collected, we host our annual wrapping party. Here our teenagers wrap gifts for the younger children, while volunteers wrap for the teenagers. One week later, the entire Camp Horizon family comes together for a holiday celebration. Rumor has it Santa is even making an appearance to deliver the gifts this year!

As always, we thank you for supporting Camp Horizon. Through your donation, you provide a lasting impact in the lives of children who are often too easily forgotten, marginalized, and under-resourced.

Sincerely,

The Camp Horizon Team

Thank you for making a difference in the lives of Georgia youth in foster care. With your generous support, we are able to expose children to the joy of summer camp. In July, we hosted 40 campers who learned to swim, horseback ride, and to build positive peer relationships.  Our campers expressed their emotions through art therapy programs, they played, smiled and made new friends.

We offer self-esteem building activities to provide young campers with the personal affirmations and coping skills they need to value themselves and to make positive life decisions.  Camp Horizon is a safe haven for children who have been bruised and abused, we nurture the whole child. Each of our activities is designed to rebuild the self worth of our campers.  At camp, our kids are happy. We stay connected to our campers throughout the year, to offer our continued support.

Thank you for making a difference in the lives of children who need your help.

Sincerely,

The Camp Horizon Team
