Update on Self-Sufficiency at Powerhouse

2023 - Update to our supporters, friends, and volunteers of Books and Bread for Kenya

Dear Supporters,

We're excited to share a significant update on our journey at Books and Bread for Kenya (BBK). Our commitment to creating self-sufficiency and positive change in Kenya continues to drive our efforts, and we're thrilled to unveil the latest developments at Jesus Healing Ministry, now newly named Powerhouse.

Jesus Healing Ministry, now newly named Powerhouse

Back in 2017, BBK took a monumental step by acquiring land near Mombasa, setting the stage for a transformative initiative.

Over the course of two dedicated years, BBK raised funds with an unwavering determination to construct a secure, permanent home for the children of Jesus Healing Ministry orphanage.

The result? A purpose-built house named Powerhouse, encompassed by fertile land bearing fruits and vegetables. Today, 24 children call Powerhouse home.

The significance of this endeavor lies not just in the physical structure, but also in the profound impact it holds for these children.

Each child of Powerhouse is either an orphan or hails from a family facing dire circumstances, where illness or extreme poverty renders adequate care and education unattainable.

Powerhouse provides them not only with a haven of safety but also with the promise of a brighter future.

Why Self-Sufficiency is Important

Enabling recipients in third-world countries, like Kenya, to become self-sufficient is at the core of our charitable mission. We believe that true empowerment goes beyond providing short-term aid; it's about fostering long-term change and independence.

By equipping individuals and communities with the skills, resources, and knowledge they need, we're helping them break free from the cycle of dependency. When people can stand on their own feet, they not only regain their dignity but also gain the ability to shape their own futures. Self-sufficiency paves the way for sustainable growth, resilience in the face of challenges, and a sense of ownership over their lives.

Our aim is to create a ripple effect of positive impact that transforms lives and communities for generations to come.

How We Can Achieve This

A shining example of this transformative power lies in the inspiring journey of Alice and Matilda. An impactful trip to Kenya with their family instilled in them a deep awareness of the living conditions in Kenya.

Their path led them to Powerhouse, where they learned from Martha and Rosalia, the Kenyan leaders of Powerhouse, about the simple need for chickens.

Around 60 chickens could provide sustenance for the children and generate income from any surplus by-ptroducts.

Returning to their home country, Alice and Matilda couldn't ignore the stark contrast between their own lives and the challenges faced by the children in Kenya. This realization ignited an unwavering determination to make a difference.

Fueled by compassion, Alice (age 11) and Matilda (age 8) embarked on a remarkable mission.

Through their efforts, they rallied support from friends and local businesses, successfully raising the funds required to purchase 60 chickens and establish a small shop on Powerhouses’ land.

The Impact

These chickens will provide a source of food to the children living at The Powerhouse, and surplus eggs, meat, and animals, as well as the fruit, and vegetables grown on their land, can be sold via the little shop to the surrounding community.

This incredible initiative reflects their determination to create positive change and contribute to the well-being of others.

We are deeply grateful for your ongoing support, which has made these endeavors like this possible.

With each step forward, we're inching closer to our vision of a more empowered and self-sufficient community.

Warm regards,

Books and Bread for Kenya
