Happy Spring! The weather is finally turning warmer as we head into the spring season – the time of year where everything is new, fresh and in bloom once again! It’s no different for Boys and Girls Clubs across Canada – we continue to celebrate many new and exciting achievements:

Families Overcoming Cultural Obstacles through the Parenting Together Program

In our most recent issue of IMPACT (Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada's National Newsletter) Joanna Duong, the group facilitator of the Vietnamese Parents Together Program in South Coast B.C. describes how Boys and Girls Clubs not only helps young people, but also supports families as a whole – especially those who may be new to Canada. Joanne says one of the most incredible things about the program is parents being given the opportunity to be part of the Club too, and connect with their children while they learn and adapt to a new language and culture. Weekly meetings and support groups are held just for parents, aimed at helping them develop and share new skills and there are also parent and child activities such as picnics, cultural events and giving back to the community. This is just one example of the dozens of incredible, life changing programs happening and Boys and Girls Clubs across Canada!

National Volunteer Week April 6 - 12

During April, Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada celebrated over 15,000 volunteers that help support our 650 service locations across Canada. Although we appreciate the generosity of our amazing volunteers every single day, this was a special week dedicated to formally recognizing those who give of themselves for the benefit of young people. Quite simply, we could not transform young lives across the country without them – and we couldn’t be more grateful. From teens to seniors with a range of skills and background, our volunteers are on the playground, at the Board table, in kitchens and fundraisers – even creating and running programs locally!

Belonging: National Day to End Bullying May 7

Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada (BGCC), together with our Clubs and partners, recognize that bullying is a growing issue facing Canadian youth. Collectively, we are striving to change the current dialogue about bullying from negative to positive, focusing on our shared belief that by building a young person’s sense of belonging, we can ultimately help to lessen the negative effects of bullying. On May 7, CIBC and BGCC partnered together on a campaign designed to increase public awareness of the issue by showing support to all young people who have been affected by bullying, as well as showing support for all anti-bullying initiatives that have been designed to ensure all children and youth feel a sense of safety and belonging. The campaign was a huge success, both on the ground and online, generating support coast to coast from Club level to celebrity level. We couldn’t be more proud of this achievement!

Thank you again for donating and helping to change the lives of thousands of children and youth across Canada! We will continue to keep you updated in the months ahead.
