Progress report for Mata no Peito

On behalf of Nike, Winrock and other partners in the Mata no Peito Initiative, we thank donors for their generous support. To date we have raised over $8,000 from 100 individuals, who via retirement of carbon credits to offset their carbon footprints have removed almost 1700 tons of CO2-equivalent from the atmosphere – the equivalent of taking 350 cars off the road for a year! Mata no Peito has also raised $25,000 in corporate commitments for the coalition initiative. All funds will be pooled with other corporate and individual partner donations to the Mata no Peito Fund, which will provide funding to projects that protect and replant forests in Brazil - improving livelihoods within forest-based communities.

Nike has been in discussions over the past three months with several high-profile corporations in Brazil regarding becoming partners in the Mata no Peito coalition with substantial donations. The next round of meetings is being scheduled for March (after Brazilian summer holidays and carnival are over), and we hope to be making an announcement shortly thereafter.

Stay tuned for the next progress update on this new and exciting initiative!

Mata no Peito progress report October 2011

On behalf of Nike, Winrock and other partners in the Mata no Peito Initiative, we thank donors for their generous support. To date we have raised over $7,000 from 90 individuals, who via retirement of carbon credits to offset their carbon footprints, have removed over 1,500 tons of CO2 from the atmosphere. Mata no Peito has also raised over $20,000 in corporate commitments for the coaltion initiative. All funds will be pooled with other corporate and individual donations to the Mata no Peito Fund, which will provide seed investments for projects that protect and replant forests in Brazil - improving livelihoods within forest-based communities. All Mata no Peito corporate and individual partners are listed on the Mata no Peito website on the Partners tab.

Winrock invited funding proposals from a dozen respected Brazilian organizations for innovative, integrated projects that reforest degraded lands and/or reduce deforestation by providing alternative incomes for local communities. Winrock is currently evaluating proposals and will make funding recommendations to the Mata no Peito advisory council and key partners.

In parallel, Nike has held a series of meetings with high-profile corporations in Brazil to discuss potential partnership in the initiative. By forming a Mata no Peito coalition with broad corporate and individual participation, Nike and Winrock hope to demonstrate the strength of joint actions to make a meaningful, positive environmental impact.

Stay tuned for the next progress update on this new and exciting initiative!
