Afghan Institute of Learning

The Afghan Institute of Learning (AIL) works to empower all Afghans who are needy, especially women and children, providing them the knowledge and skills to care for themselves. AIL is expanding access to quality education and healthcare through community based programming, enabling communities to develop the capacity of their people. The goal is to create a foundation of quality education and health systems throughout Afghanistan which meet the needs of local people now and in the future. AIL was founded by an Afghan woman and is run by women, reaching thousands each year through health facilities, educational centers and training programs.
Using Texting to Increase Literacy in Afghanistan

AIL uses cell phones and texting in its literacy program to accelerate the learning of 60 illiterate young Afghan women. Typically, students complete 3 levels of literacy class in 4 months, a feat which normally takes 18 months. AIL is looking to expand this successful program from 2 to 10 classes in different areas of Afghanistan, as well as fund the training of more teachers in how to use cell phones as a teaching tool. project reportread updates from the field
Emergency Aid for Needy Afghans

Poor Afghans in Afghanistan are particularly vulnerable in times of disaster whether natural or economic. Those without jobs, food or homes face starvation in harsh winter weather or after other natural disasters or following being displaced. In May 2014 devastating landslides struck a small village in the Afghan province of Badakhshan and AIL was able to use funds from this project to help with the relief work. project reportread updates from the field
Educate Afghan women/children through television

Many Afghans have no access to education. Dr.Sakena Yacoobi, founder of the Afghan Institute of Learning (AIL) is always looking for innovative ways to provide education to more Afghans. Having reached 14 million Afghans through AIL, she founded Radio Meraj a private radio station in Herat, which now has 2.7 million listeners. With offices and partial programming donated by AIL, Dr. Yacoobi's TV station will reach even more women and children with education, health and cultural programs. project reportread updates from the field
Provide 2 Sewing Machines to Afghans

Sewing classes are very popular as they give women a skill they can use to earn money as well as do their own family sewing. AIL Staff maintain and repair the machines as needed. Unfortunately, some of these machines have broken beyond repair. While the women in class usually share the sewing machines, there are now more women using each machine. Providing a Learning Center with a new sewing machine will solve this problem. project reportread updates from the field

Provide 4 Sewing Machines for Afghan Women

The staff at one of AIL's centers let us know that they are in need of new sewing machines. The machines that are used in class are simple in design so that the staff, as necessary, can easily repair them. Unfortunately, four of these machines have broken beyond repair. While the women in class usually share the sewing machines, there are now more women using each machine making learning difficult. Providing the center with new sewing machines will solve this problem. project reportread updates from the field
