16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence

By Rebecca Chirenga | Project Manager

On the 9th of December 2024, Women in communities and women from Shurugwi Ward 10 and 11 gathered at Mupangayi Secondary School to celebrate the 16 days of activism against Gender Based Violence.(GBV)

Over 50 women from 4 neighboring villages came together to discuss issues of GBV that are so rife in the communities.  The situation in this community was exercabated by the prevalance of food poverty created by the ElNino induced draught over the 2023-2024 rainy season.  80% of the women had struggled to put food on the table and there was need for other interventions to alleviate the crisis.  WICO also donated food hampers to the more desperate cases.

On the commemoration day, there was active dialogue among the participants and the invited guests from The local Ministry of Women, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Agriculture cadres who already work closely with the women.  Discussions were around promotion of speaking out and not to suffer in silence.  The women expressed fear of being further victimised if they made reports to the police as thismay result in arrests of the spouses.  More information and education was planned for further GBV interventions and moreso on the inclusion of man in the discussions.

The day ended with inter village sports in netball and soccer as part of the days intertainment. The GBV message was driven through.
