September Update, Quinua Congress
By Alan Adams | Asesor Internacional
The staff and members of Mushuk Yuyay are busy getting everything ready for the IX World Quinua Congress and Andean Grains Symposium to be held in Cañar in June, 2025. Accommodations are being prepared, and transportation is being arranged. Menus are arranged with traditional Andean foods along with new dishes based on Andean grains. Music and art, drama and speeches have been written.
The members of Mushuk Yuyay are also gathering local, regional, and national support and participation throughout Ecuador. Universities, businesses, and government agencies will be present.
Outside of Ecuador the Sponsorship Committee is contacting potential supporters and participants to join the Congress. We are seeing a gathering momentum of support. Please join us in making this a truly significant event for the people of Ecuador, the farmers, artists, business owners and others.
This World Quinua Congress will have a tremendous impact on the future of the local quinua producers.

Newly finished accomodations
Mushuk Yuyay continues to find support for the Congress among governement officals and business leaders as well as university administrators. Local mayors, the provincial governor, and national ministry officials are lending support. The National Institute of Agricultural Research has collabotated with the planting of two new varieties on quinua on the Mushuk Yuyay farm. These varieties are also planted as seedlings in the greenhouse for distribution to farmers around the area. The local communities have organized savings and loan associations to facilitate planting and harvesting in the mountain ecosystems. These associations are receiving support from TCP Global, and international NGO that has experience with community savings and loan groups. Construction is proceeding on accomodations and meeting halls, and arrangements are being made for transportation and broadcasting systems. We have formed a committee of Mushuk Yuyay supporters to reach out for more monetary resources which will flow through GlobalGiving. We welcome all support. The donors will be honored at the World Quinua Congress for their generosity.

This month we have created a Sponsor Search Committee and have begun to form strategies for contacting potential sponsors. We will be able to show results soon.
During this time Mushuk Yuyay has also built support in Ecuador by contacting municipal, provincial, and national government officials. Last week they had a productive meeting with the Governor of the Province of Cañar. They have also met with the Universidad del Azuay for technical support and resources.
We have written to organizations that have offered to publicize the IX World Quinua Congress. The articles should appear in the newsletters soon.
We also received a beautiful letter of support from Joan Gross of Oregon State University:
I have followed Mushuk Yuyay’s agricultural work for over a decade and am impressed with the progress they’ve made supporting smallholder farmers and re-valorizing native crops for the nutritional and environmental benefits they bring. Kañaripeople have been involved with the Intercultural Learning Community on Food, Culture, and Social Justice since 2013 and we have benefitted immensely from their knowledgeable participation. In 2016, they hosted a group of Oregon State University students and Nicolás Pichazaca demonstrated his organizational skills as we experienced planting, cooking and eating within this millennial Andean culture.
