IX World Quinoa Congress, Canar-Ecuador

PROJECT: CELEBRATION OF THE IX WORLDS QUINUA CONGRESS AND VI ANDEAN GRAINS SYMPOSIUM 2025 IN THE TERRITORY OF THE KICHWA KAÑARI NATION IN SOUTHERN ECUADOR

After 20 years (2005-2025), this worldwide event will be carried out under the leadership of a community organization of the Original Kichwa Kañari People if southern Ecuador for first time. It is now in the process of planning, coordination, making agreements, socialization, visits with State institutions, Research Centers, civil organizations, NGOs, local governments, universities, private businesses, organizations of Peoples and Nationalities, communities, and enterprises. In this process, and according to the analysis of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) the limited economic resources of the responsible entity to organize this worldwide event were determined. 

It is important to mention and thank the former Peace Corps Volunteer, Alan Adams, who in 1967 to 1969 was in the Kañari territory at the time of the Agrarian Reform. In this process, Alan worked shoulder to shoulder with the community leader Lino Pichasaca Guaman and other leaders. This alliance and participation was reborn after 44 years (2013) through contact made by the founder and leader of the Association Mushuk Yuyay and present Executive Secretary of the IX World Quinua Congress, Nicolás Pichazaca Mayancela.

After more than 10 years, (2013-2025) has become an agent and international advisor for Mushuk Yuyay and the Kichwa Kañari People because through his efforts the Association has received economic assistance from First Peoples Worldwide, Friends of Ecuador for the work of the project known as “Healthy Children, Healthy Future”, for production of Andean Grains, for the processing center, and for, since 2021, help from GlobalGiving for the project known as “Reactivation of the value chain of grains in Kañari family farming post COVID 19 to preserve and guarantee the local agrobiodiversity, food security the principles of solidarity in the territory of the Kichwa Kañari People and other populations in southern Ecuador. . This help has been the most significant in that it has allowed the process of consolidation and empowerment, as well as permit the participation of in the VIII World Quinua Congress and International Andean Grains Symposium 2023 in Potosí, Bolivia where the responsibility of hosting the IX World Quinua Congress was awarded to the Association Mushuk Yuyay.

 Based on the above, and with over $2,000 that came from GlobalGiving in 2023m we began the elaboration of project and the management of the World Congress in June, 2023. From that date, and until now, the following activities have been carried out:

a. Visited and explained the IX Congress project in 10 universities, 11 State institutions, 5 private businesses, 9 non-governmental organizations, and 15 communities. In this process, contact has been made with international institutions and scientists to explain the IX World Congress project.

b. Once the Project had been presented, starting from Nov. and Dec. 1014, we organized the Scientific Committee in the Territory. In doing this, we visited and dialogued. We selected our own local human capital and began analyzing the origin of quinua and other Andean grains, the Congresses since 2005, the organizers of each two years, and the locations where these were held. We analyzed the results of each Congress, the logistics, thematic tables, and the alliances.

c. After several meetings, we managed to organize the Scientific Committee of the Territory. It is important to mention that in this process, we discovered that we human talent with great merit, creativity, and innovation, with whom we analyzed the situation from local, regional, national, and international perspectives and projections. This way, we organized the Congress on 3 topics: Academic Scientific, Artistic Cultural, and Commercial Exchange.

Topic 1. Scientific Academic. We examined the 5 themes of the 8 congresses and added one theme more: Andean grains, nutrition, and integral health. Why? In this region, and in this country, there are many events in agriculture, health, nutrition, and others where healthy foods are discussed, nevertheless, in the refreshments they offer foods of little nutritional value, ultra processed foods. For this reason, this topic is organized with 6 thematic tables:

1. The Agro-centric and pachasophic Matrix
2. Fito genetic and biodiversity resources
3. Production systems and climate change
4. Agroindustry and markets
5. Andean grains and integral nutrition and health
6. Community and public policies

To guarantee the success of these thematic tables and of the Congress, the Scientific Committee has incorporated experts of national and international renown from Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Mexico, Chile, Argentina, France, the United States, and other countries in the process of administration and connection.

 Topic 2. Artistic Cultural. This is intended to restore and demonstrate the living community culture through the arts of music, dance, painting, theater, poetry, and gastronomy.

Topic 3. Commercial Exchange. This is intended to organize and demonstrate, through an International Fair of Tawa Inti Suyu, the latest scientific advances in the areas of research, production, and mechanization, etc.

PROYECTO: CELEBRACIÓN DEL IX CONGRESO MUNDIAL DE LA QUINUA Y VI SIMPOSIO DE GRANOS ANDINOS-2025 EN EL TERRITORIO DE LA NACIÓN CAÑARI KICHWA-REGIÓN SUR DEL ECUADOR

Este evento mundial después de 20 años (2005-2025), que por primera vez se va desarrollar bajo el liderazgo de una organización comunitaria del pueblo originario Kañari kichwa de la región sur del Ecuador, está en proceso planificación, coordinación, acuerdos, convenios, socialización, visitas, a las instituciones del Estado, Centro de Investigación, organizaciones de sociedad civil, ONGs, Gobiernos Autónomos descentralizados, Universidades, Empresas Privadas, organizaciones de pueblos y nacionalidades, comunidades y emprendimientos; en este proceso y de acuerdo el análisis de fortalezas, oportunidades, debilidades y amenaza-FODA se determinó el limitado recursos económicos por parte de la organización encargada de organizar este evento mundial.

Es importante mencionar y agradecer al ex voluntario de Cuerpo de Paz Alan Adams, quien en los años 1967, 1968 y parte del año 1969, estaba en el territorio del pueblo kañari, época de la Reforma Agraria, en este proceso Alan trabajó hombro a hombro con el líder Lino Pichazaca Guamán y otros líderes/asa, esta alianza y participación volvió a renacer después de 44 años (2013), mediante un contacto que hizo el líder fundador de la asociación Mushuk Yuyay y actual Secretario Ejecutivo del IX Congreso Mundial de la quinua Nicolas Pichazaca Mayancela.

Después de más 10 años (2013-2025) Alan se ha transformado para Mushuk Yuyay y para el pueblo kañari kichwa en un gestor y asesor internacional, ya que a través del él se ha recibido apoyo económico de First Peoples Worldwide, Friends of Ecuador para el trabajo del proyecto denominado “Niños saludables futuro saludable”, producción de granos andinos para el centro de acopio y transformación de granos y a partir del año 2021 el apoyo de la institución GlobalGiving  para el proyecto denominado “Reactivación de la cadena de valor de los granos en la agricultura familiar cañari post emergencia COVID-19, para preservar y garantizar la agro-biodiversidad local, la seguridad alimentaria y los principios de solidaridad en el territorio del Pueblo kichwa cañari y cañarense región sur del Ecuador”, siendo este apoyo el más significativo que ha permitido entrar en el proceso de consolidación, empoderamiento y además permitió la participación en el VIII Congreso Mundial de la Quinua, Simposio Internacional de granos andinos 2023 en Potosí Bolivia en donde nos encargan la novena edición del Congreso Mundial de la Quinua.

Con esta base y con más de $ 2000 de capital que brindo GlobalGiving en el año 2023 iniciamos la elaboración del proyecto y la gestión del congreso mundial en junio del 2023, desde esta fecha hasta la actualidad se ha realizado las siguientes actividades:

a. se ha visitado y se ha socializado el proyecto del XI congreso en 10 universidades, 11 instituciones del Estado, 5 empresas privadas, 9 organizaciones no gubernamentales, 15 comunidades; en este proceso se ha puesto en contacto vía redes sociales con instituciones y científicos internacionales dando conocer el proyecto del IX Congreso Mundial

b. una vez socializado el proyecto, a partir de noviembre y diciembre del año 2024 pasamos a organizar el Comité Científico del Territorio; en esta ocasión visitamos, dialogamos y seleccionamos nuestro propio capital humano local, de esta forma iniciamos analizando el origen de la quinua y otros granos andinos, luego los congresos desde el año 2005 y los organizadores de cada 2 años y los escenarios donde se llevó a cabo; también los resultados de cada congreso, la logística, las mesas temáticas y las alianzas.

c. luego de varias reuniones logramos organizar el comité científico del territorio, es importante mencionar que en este proceso sentimos y observamos que tenemos talentos humanos con muchos méritos, creatividad e innovadores, con quienes analizamos desde lo local, regional, nacional, internacional y con proyecciones; de esta forma organizamos el proyecto del congreso e 3 ejes: Científico Académico, Artistico Cultural e Intercambio Comercial

Eje 1. Científico académico examinamos las 5 mesas temáticas de los 8 congresos y aumentamos una mesa temática más los granos andinos, nutrición y salud integral ¿por qué? En la región y en el país en muchos eventos en agricultura, salud, nutrición y otros se habla y se debate de la alimentación saludable, sin embargo, en los refrigerios brindan alimentos poco saludable-ultra procesados; con esta base este eje queda organizado con 6 mesas temáticas, que a continuación se detalla:

1. Matriz agro-céntrico y r andina

2. Recursos fitogenéticos y biodiversidad

3. Sistema de producción y cambio climático

4. Agroindustria y mercados

5. Los granos andinos nutrición y salud integral

6. Políticas comunitarias y públicas

Para garantizar el éxito de estas mesas temáticas y el congreso se ha incorporado en el Comité Científico a expertos de renombre nacional e internacional de Ecuador, Perú, Bolivia, México, Chile, Argentina, Francia, EE UU y otros en proceso de gestión y vinculación

Eje 2. artístico cultural, se pretende recuperar y demostrar la cultura viva comunitaria a través de las artes, es decir, música, danza, pintura, teatro, poesía y gastronomía

Eje 3. Intercambio comercial, se proyecta organizar y demostrar a través de la feria internacional del Tawa Inti Suyo los últimos avances científicos en el campo de la investigación, producción, mecanización, etc.
