Clean Water for Afghan Communities Project Update

By Missy Simmons | Director of Organizational Development

Thanks to our generous donors, four Afghan communities have gained access to clean water near their homes since the start of the year. These wells are making it possible for hundreds of families to meet their basic daily water needs from a clean and reliable water source.

Most Afghans do not have access to running water in their homes and must walk to collect their water. Therefore, the average Afghan household, which averages seven people, uses 4 - 15 gallons per day. This is challenging to meet all the daily water needs for cleaning, cooking, bathing, and drinking. In contrast, the average American household, which averages three people, uses about 300 gallons of water per day.

Having a water source closer to home makes it possible for more frequent trips for water collection, which will improve families' wellbeing, especially improving health and hygiene.

Pictured above is the installation of one of the water tanks. Because water tables are dropping in some areas, we installed electric pumps that can extract water from deeper levels. It also requires less effort for those collecting the water as the alternative is hand pumping the water.

The pump is powered by solar and pumps water into the large, insulated storage tank. The insulation helps to keep the water from freezing in the winter and from becoming hot in the summer.

The community can collect the water they need by simply turning the tap on the storage tank, which remains full day and night.
