Wellbeing for 550 children & families in Colombia

The nutritional situation of children in Bogotá highlights the urgent need to strengthen community and solidarity actions, especially in areas such as Soacha, where socioeconomic conditions increase the risk of food insecurity.

According to the latest National Nutritional Status Survey (ENSIN 2015), cited in the NiñezYA report:

• Bogotá has a prevalence of chronic malnutrition of 13% in children, one of the highest figures in the country among the main regions studied.
• 10.8% of children under 5 suffer from chronic malnutrition.
• 25.5% of households in the country face moderate or severe food insecurity.
• 5% are in severe food insecurity.

These figures confirm that, although Bogotá has made institutional progress, malnutrition remains a significant challenge, especially for children and young people from vulnerable sectors.

Context of the Soacha headquarters and the importance of the solidarity cafeteria:

In municipalities such as Soacha, food insecurity has a profound impact on families and, therefore, on children and young people. That is why spaces that protect and strengthen child nutrition are essential.

Our commitment is embodied in the Solidarity Cafeteria:

• 110 healthy lunches delivered daily to the cafeteria.
• Access to healthy food.
• Lunches and snacks prepared according to a nutritional menu designed for the specific needs of the children we serve.

This guarantees balanced, varied meals designed to strengthen their physical growth, daily energy, and ability to learn.

Nutritious snacks at our three locations in Usaquén, Ciudad Bolívar, and Soacha:

In addition to the dining hall, we provide nutritious snacks at our three locations to complement the children's day and contribute to their overall development.

These snacks help to:

• Improve concentration and learning.
• Provide energy and physical performance.
• Reinforce healthy eating habits from an early age.

These actions not only complement their daily diet, but also reduce the risks associated with undernourishment and malnutrition, two problems that affect their growth, school performance, and future opportunities.

For the reasons mentioned above, organizations, institutions, companies, and networks in the country continue to promote actions that protect the right to adequate food.

These efforts seek to ensure that children can have positive experiences around good nutrition, learn to enjoy it, and grow up in environments that care for their well-being.

These months have been very special for us, as we celebrated 34 years of accompanying children, young people, and their families on their journey of growth, learning, and creating their life plans.

For more than three decades, we have witnessed thousands of inspiring stories of overcoming economic and social barriers:

• More than 7,000 children and young people have benefited from our training programs.
• More than 32,500 people have benefited indirectly.
• More than 28,398 training workshops have been held at our three locations.
• We have reduced school dropout rates in our territories by 80%.
• We have maintained our nutritional support for children and young people on an annual basis.
• Our purpose has been and will continue to be the same: to create real opportunities for every child and young person to discover their potential, strengthen their skills, and build a purposeful life project.

Activities of the month:

In Usaquén, children participated in a workshop on love, a space to learn to recognize and express this value in everyday life, bringing the knowledge learned to the people who live in the neighborhood. In addition, together with the Universidad del Bosque, we held an oral health day where dental assessments were carried out and recommendations for oral care and hygiene were given to parents and caregivers, thus strengthening self-care habits in the family.

In Ciudad Bolívar, adolescents participated in a healthy cooking workshop, preparing nutritious tacos and learning that eating well is also a way of loving oneself. While cooking, they developed skills such as patience, cooperation, and communication, demonstrating that every experience can be an opportunity for growth. To end the month with energy, we gave the children and their families glasses that will allow them to see better.

In Soacha, the month ended with raising awareness among parents and caregivers about the importance of transmitting values and norms at home, reminding them that children learn mainly through example. We reflected on how adults' verbal and nonverbal communication directly influences the attitudes and ways of relating of children and young people, thus strengthening more conscious, respectful, and loving families.

Turning 34 is an opportunity to look back with gratitude and forward with hope.

We remain steadfast in our commitment to provide every child and young person with the tools to build a future with purpose.
