This Project aims to provide clean water 30,000 Darfur genocide survivors in a Chad refugee camp, 85% of whom are women, children, and the elderly. Due to desert winds and seasonal rains, wells often fill with sand, and water become contaminated. While refugees volunteer to clean wells, they need tools and resources to maintain them. In response to COVID-19, we focus on long-term recovery, pandemic prevention, raising awareness, and promoting solidarity t ensure water access and health security
In the camp, water sources are seasonal: open ponds during the rainy season, shared with livestock, become contaminated, while wells are buried by windblown contaminants due to deforestation. After the rains, refugees wait in line for days for water. With no income, families weld broken plastic containers to fetch and store water from distant sources. The lack of education, health care, and information on pandemics exacerbates the challenges, leaving 7,000 families vulnerable to water scarcity.
This project supports 30,000 refugees by providing water, including tools, containers, and food to volunteers ensuring clean water access. Darfur Women Network distributes two water containers per family and educates the community on pandemic prevention. In partnership with GlobalGiving, 4,000 containers are provided for safe water storage to help prevent disease. Access to the internet is also crucial, transforming communication, education, and emergency response within the camp.
We expect this project to increase clean water access for 30,000 refugees by 2024. Through a community-led approach, refugees will maintain wells, address survival challenges, and improve health. A key focus is ensuring access to internet, technology literacy, networking, and emergency communication to enhance their quality of life and resilience.
