As mentioned in the prior update, community members initiated the process to buy land within Montana de la Nieve, located in the district of San Antonio de Cortes, where a micro-watershed serves as the principal water source in the district and supplies water to 17 communities. This initiative was the result of the community attempting to determine different ways in which to protect both the area, as well as its water resources.
During the process, some challenges emerged, one of which was obtaining sufficient funds needed for the land acquisition. In order to overcome this, the community decided to establish a tariff, which was calculated using the AtWhatCost tool (a Water For People tool that calculates all current and future costs and timing of capital repairs and replacement). Community members agreed to a sustainable tariff, thereby allowing a fund to be created for this objective and ultimately enabling protection of the micro-watershed. Excitingly, future plans are underway to purchase six additional plots of land, which will result in a total of ten plots of land within the zone that supplies water to the 17 communities.
Meanwhile, the district of El Negrito, located in the department of Yoro, continues to move forward with the formation of a Technical Unit for Water and Sanitation. The district recently approved the agreement for the creation of a Decentralized District Unit for Water and Sanitation. This agreement represents significant advances in the socialization of the Technical Unit for Water and Sanitation's statute of operations, as well as budget determinations to launch its first year.
The next step in the process involves obtaining approval of complementary activities, such as the Asset Analysis (a Water For People tool that facilitates a comprehensive system diagnostic of current water infrastructure and functionality, which highlights when systems will need to be repaired/replaced in order to support proper planning and budgeting). All of these activities are part of Water For People'ss sustainability framework and encourage autonomy in administrative, financial, and technical capacities.
