Water For People's Everyone Forever initiative is a unique programmatic effort to support water and sanitation to Everyone in targeted municipalities, Forever. The goal is for the municipalities and communities to never again need an international water and sanitation agency to address their challenges. Water For People-Honduras is focusing its Everyone Forever programming in the mostly rural municipalities of Chinda, El Negrito, Ilama, and San Antonio de Cortes, approximately 97,000 people.
In late 1998, Honduras was the victim of one of the most devastating hurricanes to hit the country. Hurricane Mitch parked over the country for 6 days, wiping out everything he could find in his way. Many families went from having a small estate to having absolutely nothing. Along with homes and schools, Mitch also destroyed many water points leaving water borne illness to thrive and many women, children and men sick from contamination.
Water For People is targeting every school, family and clinic with water and sanitation coverage in the four municipalities where we work in Honduras. We focus on sustainability of the systems through local community and government partnerships that help maintain the systems through co-financing, training and governance. Since 1998, Water For People has helped increase overall water and sanitation coverage in these four municipalities. Currently, we are on track to reach full coverage by 2018.
Water For People has already declared full water coverage in the municipality of Chinda, meaning a generation of children will now be free of water poverty! Yet, we need your support in monitoring to make sure the systems do not fall into disrepair. Additionally, we need your help reaching everyone in the three other Honduran municipalities. In 2012 we will continue to lay the groundwork for Everyone Forever as programming will take place in 24 communities and 3 schools.
