In Aoearoa New Zealand we are halfway through a very wet spring. What does all of this water bring? Well pollutants... but also, a lot of interest from the community on how they can act to protect our precious wai maori (freshwater).
We are excited to announce that we have had a record number of community individuals sign up to Adopt their neighbourhood drain! Drum roll please....
TEN NEW PLEDGES!
This is really exciting for us because it almost doubles our Adopt a Drain pledges for all time.
We are thrilled with this confirmation that the community is interested in learning, and taking action to protect our wai maori (freshwater).
In the past 6 months we have held 4 Adopt a Drain sessions for outstanding individuals. We invited their neighbours, installed the steel fish on their chosen drain, and had a great time disucssing what people know about their drains and stormwater systems.
So, we are going to be busy over the next few months with the 10 new pledges.
Check out the WAI Wanaka website to learn about two surprising spring pollutants; grass clippings and fertilisers. Read it today and take the pledge to improve your gardening habits this season with two simple actions.
We are beyond excited that the community is choosing to enact our vision with us, to make sure that everyone who touches the water acts to protect it.
The team at WAI have the expertise, the passion and the drive to protect the water - but we don't have the funding to move fast enough.
We need funding to expand our programmes, gather critical data, and enagage more of the community. With your support, we can ensure that the freshwater ecosystem is healthy and resilient for future generations.
