Drains are Streams programme
In 2023 WAI Wanaka ran a 4-week programme connecting tamariki to local aquatic species and stormwater pollution. Through this programme tamariki have evolved into storm drain experts, understanding the impacts of stormwater pollution and fostering connections to the species we aim to protect.
Megan, a teacher at Wanaexcel said “The kids all went home and taught their parents last week, it was so cute. All the parents came in saying they came home singing ‘only storm water rain in our drain.’ So great to hear them learning
and re-telling!”
80 tamariki/children participated in this programme.
Adopt a Drain programme
- 6 neighbourhoods who have 'adopted' their local drain and,
- 2 LittaTraps were also installed and,
- 2 Adopt a Drain Newsletters were released providing locally relevent action-based actions for local residents
“We are delighted to be the first urban (Upper Clutha) community to install these traps and encourage other communities to do the same. In this way we can all work together to preserve our beautiful community for generations to come.”
- said Tania from the Albert Town Community Association
