In May we were thrilled to host the NZ Marine Studies Centre’s Aquavan and their team for an all-ages drop-in session for the whole community.
The NZ Marine Studies Centre (through the University of Otago) brings live marine critters and touch pools to schools and communities to create awareness and understanding of the connectivity between river health and the coastal environment.
Specially designed to transport marine species, the van is equipped with chilled re-circulating seawater tanks and a mobile touch tank to support hands-on learning.
We had a huge turn out for the drop-in and schools sessions with;
607 rangatahi (Children) and,
44 adults attended.
The Wanaka Primary newsletter share this about the visit:
"It was lovely to see so many children and their whanau visiting the Aquavan after school on Tuesday. The facilitators were so informative and everyone enjoyed learning more about our coastal wildlife. The classes that visited on Tuesday and Wednesday thoroughly enjoyed their highly interactive and hands-on sessions."
WAI Wanaka is proud to be backed by science, a key pillar is to communicate the sceince behind what is happening to the wai maori (fresh water) in our catchment and it is imperative we continue to connect our community with experts such as the team behind the Aquavan.
