One to Beat the Odds

Who remembers their high school graduation?  I sure remember mine! In fact, I was reminded this past June, that it was 30 years ago! Graduation is certainly a turning point in one’s life.  And it surely was that for our young friend, Angelica.  We have known her family for nearly 10 years. When she was just 11 years old girl, she had a cancerous tumor appear just over her right eye. We helped her through her treatments.  Thank the Lord, she has gotten a clean bill of health, every check up, for the past 7 years!  for the past 3 years you have helped us assist in sending her to private school, after her public school held a lottery (due to overcrowding), and she did not make the cut.  A common problem that unfortunately leads to many uneducated young people. But she got another chance. Angie really blossomed in private school, and was so eager to finish well.

I was honored to be at her graduation this past month (the only “whetto” or white guy in the auditorium), to celebrate with her family. It wasn’t until I sat there, as each graduate walked the stage, that I realized just how much of an opportunity she has been given, with the education she received.  As I witnessed the grand ceremony of the many other achievers, alongside Angie, the thought occurred to me, that there may have been a greater purpose for her not making that lottery in public school. Angelica plans to continue her education, by going to nursing school, perhaps desiring to help in the medical field where she once was helped, as a young girl. She has started a job which she plans to work for 6 months, in order to save money for when she will start nursing school in February. We plan to continue sponsoring her through nursing school, and have already paid her registration. Soon, we will find out what the monthly tuition will be. Please let us know if you would like to help sponsor Angie. We know she is going to be one who will make a difference, and beat the odds of the socio-economy around her.
