We have been successful in monitoring the progress of the "Empower 220 Women in Kenya with $20 for 2 Chicken" in Sotik Sub-county, Bomet County Kenya. The members are still keeping poultry and they keep on enhancing the flock and it has enabled them to see it as an enterprise to them as they are able to pay school fees for their children and help in meeting household expenses.
On average, there are around 10 chicken per flock for all the beneficiaries. They keep on renewing based on sales of the flock depending on seasons. Within Tuiyomoi Self Help Group, the beneficiaries have been able to champion for better paultry management for other community members based on the training they have received from Hand in Hand Eastern Africa.
There has been a training on vaccination regimes to ensure that the chicken are devoid of diseases. This reduces the mortality rate hence ensuring maximization of profits. They have also been trained on feed formulation and mixing. This has helped them save on the the amounts of money that would have been used in purchasing more expensive feeds from agrovets and can thus channel the saved amounts in to other areas of need. They would wish to improve on the chicken housing in order to hold a larger capacity of the flock during the booming season
Hand in Hand Eastern Africa envisions to amplify this work by accelerating the impact to ensure increased profits from the chicken enterprises. Through partnerships with Kukuchik and Kenya Agricultutal and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO), we intend to leverage on industry best practices to ensure maximum production and also support the beneficiaries through Market Linkage
