Help Build An ICT Empowerment Center for IDP Girls

By Sonia Buma | President & Co-Founder

Dear friends, partners and supporters,

We are delighted to share the following progress updates with you highlighting our efforts to secure the funding and resources to build the first ICT Empowerment Center for IDP Girls in Cameroon.

Project Report Update for the STEMpower ICT Empowerment Center

Project ID: 64043
Project Title: Help Build An ICT Empowerment Center for IDP Girls in Cameroon
Date: December 19, 2024
Organization: Hope for Cameroon

Introduction and Overview

Since the launch of our STEMpower ICT Training Center initiative, we have remained steadfast in our mission to empower internally displaced girls (IDPs) in Cameroon through ICT education. Despite the challenges posed by the ongoing Anglophone crisis, which has disrupted education for over 855,000 children, our efforts have offered a lifeline to these girls, equipping them with the skills to build sustainable futures.

We are committed to bridging the digital skills gap for IDP girls and have made significant strides toward building a dedicated ICT empowerment center. This report highlights both ongoing and new activities undertaken since our last update.

Progress and New Developments

  1. Continued Fundraising Efforts
Our focus remains on raising the necessary funds to construct the STEMpower ICT Training Center. While our participation in #GivingTuesday did not yield immediate financial contributions, the campaign served to amplify awareness of our mission. Undeterred, we continue to explore innovative strategies to engage supporters and secure funding for this transformative project.

  2. Partnership with Google’s Grow with Google Initiative
A pivotal achievement in our journey has been forming a partnership with Google’s Grow with Google initiative. This collaboration equips us with resources to deliver cutting-edge ICT training to IDP girls. Through this program, the girls will acquire in-demand skills, including coding, web development, software design, and graphic design, among others. Additionally, participants will earn globally recognized certifications that position them for freelancing opportunities or employment in the ICT sector.

  3. Empowerment Through ICT Training
With the resources from our partnership with Google, we can now provide IDP girls with the tools and knowledge to transform their lives. These skills will enable them to establish independent businesses or secure meaningful employment, fostering economic independence and community impact.

Next Steps and Immediate Needs

  1. Fundraising for Physical Infrastructure
The construction of a dedicated learning environment remains a top priority. A physical center will provide a safe, equipped space for learning and development, essential for fostering growth and collaboration among the participants.
  2. Acquisition of Equipment
To complement the training programs, we need to secure ICT equipment such as computers, software licenses, and reliable internet connectivity. These resources are critical to ensuring that the training programs are practical and effective.
  3. Building Strategic Partnerships
Beyond Google, we aim to form additional partnerships with organizations and stakeholders who share our vision of empowering IDP girls through technology. Collaborative efforts will help us scale our impact and reach more beneficiaries.

Long-Term Vision

The STEMpower ICT Training Center will serve as a beacon of hope for IDP girls, providing them with the opportunity to rebuild their futures through education and skills development. Our goal is to empower 100 girls annually, creating a ripple effect of change in their families and communities. As they gain economic independence and confidence, they will inspire others to pursue similar opportunities, fostering a culture of resilience and self-reliance.

Call to Action

We invite you to join us in making this vision a reality. Whether through donations, partnerships, or advocacy, your support can help us overcome the barriers these girls face and build a brighter, more inclusive future for them.

Together, we can contribute to transform the lives of IDP girls one skill at a time.

Happy Holidays, merry Christmas and happy new year in advance to you all!

With gratitude,

Sonia Buma
