Fifteen years ago, Perkin Educational Opportunities Foundation, Inc. opened the doors of Amún Shéa School as a community-led solution in response to the lack of quality education opportunities in rural Northern Morazán, El Salvador.
A significant part of this solution is creating an environment that values peacemaking and teaches peace culture.
Let us be clear: At Amún Shéa, we run towards peace. We never run from it. Our staff works hard to create and maintain a school environment filled with peace. This includes instilling a culture of peace. We know that to promote an environment of peace and non-violence, it is important to recognize and practice the principles and values that guide us to act with respect for the integrity of people and their rights. We are running towards peace and joy like our life depends on it...because it does. In a world ridden with violence, we choose peace. In a society where pain is the only thing on the TV screen, we choose hope. We are committed to showing and teaching a better way: the Amún Shéa way.
Please be sure to check out Amún Shéa's Facebook page to hear and see students' messages about peace from the September 21st International Day of Peace events.
Here at Amún Shéa School, we believe in Science Education for all!
Picture this: Pendulums swinging back and forth, a solar system planetarium set hanging above, and molecular cell models spread out. If you were to visit CIAC, the Interactive Center for Scientific Learning, this is what you'd see and so much more at Amún Shéa School. Through an agreement with MINED (the Salvadoran Ministry of Education), CIAC is housed at the Amún Shéa school campus --and it is literally the only one of its kind in Morazán. In fact, there are only two CIACs in all of El Salvador. Click HERE to find out more about CIAC (en español). CIAC at Amún Shéa was designed to make science education accessible to all in Morazán, not just Amún Shéa students. And after being closed for a few years due to the pandemic, CIAC is finally starting to open its doors again. This is certainly one small step for El Salvador and one giant leap for rural education worldwide! This is one example of how we are transforming education for a brighter and more peaceful El Salvador. Thank you for your continued support.
This year 2023, we are celebrating 15 years of Amún Shéa existence. That’s right–15 (10 + 5) years! Fifteen years of reimagining rural education. Fifteen years of challenging the status quo. Fifteen years of shaking up the educational system. Fifteen years of seeing children and youth as #changemakers and providing the tools for critical thinking and real-world application. Fifteen years of working alongside families and communities in Northern Morazán, El Salvador. To celebrate, we are focusing on four main priorities this year:
Enrich our early childhood education program, Semillas. We’ve created a project profile for this very effort here on GlobalGiving. Here’s the link to learn more: SUPPORT EARLY LEARNING
Develop a socio-emotional well-being initiative. More details to come throughout the summer!
Enhance our English program. We have an awesome English teacher on staff and are committed to providing the necessary support so that our students in all grade levels will flourish!
Implement an impact evaluation to help us better tell the stories of Amún Shéa and the rural Salvadoran communities that form our DNA, identify areas for improvement, and highlight our strengths. This will be a major task, but a very necessary one! We look forward to sharing the results with you in the future.
If you would like to help more tangibly with any of the four priorities, please let us know by sending us an email at email@example.com. We are also preparing to participate in GlobalGiving's July Bonus Day and ask for a $1000 pledge from anyone able and willing to give. The funds generated will go directly to one of the four listed priorities. Contact us for more information.
We currently have 90 students enrolled this year, and we are having a fantastic school year so far. From fishing trips and student council elections to Earth and Water Day celebrations and lots of suspenseful chess games–we have an active year in play! Be sure to follow our school’s Facebook page to see our weekly updates with photos HERE.

Cheers to fifteen years of joy, laughter, and learning, and here's to fifteen years and more to come! Thank you for making this work and positive change possible.
