Train 700 Youth to become Builders of Peace.

Greetings from Uganda! 

With half of the year already gone, we are excited to share with you that we have made up for the time lost during the pandemic. With Schools fully open for the last 7 months Uganda Unites has been able to break ground in new schools and new communities. We have engaged 5,994 youth between January and July 2022. 1,532 youth of those engaged have signed up to become members of Uganda Unites and go through an additional 30 weekly credits of mentorship. 35 of the members have committed to volunteer with Uganda Unites giving a minimum of 8 Hours a week to support the Uganda Unites vision and mission. 

Leonard Ssenyange, 21, was the president of the St. Henry’s College - Kyengera Peace Club for 1 year and with other younger leaders undertook our 30 credits mentorship program. In 2021 he graduated out of high school and the peace club and joined Makerere University. The mentorship had inspired him to do more for his community and he wanted to continue sharing the knowledge he accrued in the peace club with other young people in the new space at the university, and so in the 2nd quarter of 2022 Leonard as a new volunteer with Uganda Unites launched a Peace Club on Makerere University with 23 changes agents. Leonard’s story inspires us to continue mentoring young people, and as we inch closer to the end of 2022 our target is to engage and mentor 12,000 youth across Uganda.

Hello there,

We hope you’re keeping well and smashing right through your goals seeing as quarter one of 2022 has just rolled away. 

We would like to bring you up to speed on what we at Uganda Unites have been up to during the first quarter of 2022.

In January of 2022 a two-year long curfew in Uganda of 9pm to 5am was lifted, enabling Ugandans to move freely. This coincided with the opening of schools and universities which had been closed as a result of the pandemic.  This meant that we could resume our school relation tours physically and interact with students in real time. This also meant that we could do follow up visits with our partner schools and offer peace club support.

In the first quarter of 2022, we engaged 5,429 students across the country, 46% of whom signed up to be members of Uganda Unites and joined Peace Clubs.

We expanded our reach into three (3) districts; Lira, Kasese and Fort Portal. Launching in Kasese was exciting for us given that in the  past it has been riddled with tribal conflict, with the youth being the major actors in the same. Setting up camp here therefore comes with great promise for us with regard to peace building as well as mentoring these youth.

We signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Elizabeth Kisaaka and Martha Kisakye _the  two ladies who represented Uganda in the Global Unites International Oratory competition, finishing in 2nd and 3rd place, and won a  shared community development grant of UGX 2.5M. The community development project these ladies have embarked on is aimed at providing primary school students who have dropped out of schools due to challenges brought on by the pandemic with writing, reading and numeracy skills.

Looking at the bigger picture, so far we have engaged 22.6% youth of our annual target, 20.9% of our intended target have signed up to be members. Of the 140 peace clubs we intend to form this year, 29 have been setup so far, and we have signed up 6.7% of the 60 volunteers we intend on bringing on this year alone.

With the onset of the second quarter of 2022, we are going strong in our quest to transform youth in Uganda, equipping them with leadership skills and encouraging them to gravitate towards non-violence in the face of conflict.
