Uganda Unites will set up 35 peace clubs in the seven regions of Uganda that are the most prone to violence. The peace clubs will identify and work with 700 young people at risk of radicalization and violent extremism. These youth will be equipped with leadership, peacebuilding and conflict transformation skills. Aged between 13 and 25 years old, they will become agents of change within their communities advocating and educating for peace to end the cycles of violence that plague the country.
Uganda has never had a democratic and peaceful transition of power; every new leader has been ushered in by war and more than 500,000 lives have been lost to conflict. As the second youngest population in the world, youth are at the center of the violence. This unrest is fuelled by the high youth unemployment rates. Many are therefore being radicalised by extremist groups into violent activity with promise of better life. The project will train 700 youth to counter radicalisation in 7 regions.
Our Peace Clubs will support and train young people through peace building techniques as well as reconciliation and leadership skills. The project will also enhance their capacity to counter misinformation, disinformation and manipulation, instead they will grow positive new relationships for reconciliation. The Peace Clubs are a mechanism that help young people to challenge stereotypes, prejudices and work together for development.
The project will develop the knowledge and capacity of 700 young people to uphold a culture of non-violence and promote reconciliation at the grassroot community level. 50% of the youth we train will become Uganda Unites members with 10% signing up to volunteer and start peace clubs in their communities. The project will indirectly engage 1,400 young people and increase the number of young people prepared and equipped to counter hate speech, radicalization and violence in their communities.
