Uganda Unites will set up 24 peace clubs in the 3 districts of Eastern Uganda that are prone to violence. The peace clubs will identify and work with 480 young people at risk of radicalization and violent extremism. These youth will be equipped with leadership, peacebuilding and conflict transformation skills. Aged between 13 and 25 years old, they will become agents of change within their communities advocating and educating for peace to end the cycles of violence that plague the country.
Pastoralist groups in the Karamoja region have been engaged for centuries in cycles of reciprocal livestock raiding, involving inter-communal armed violence. With the increasing availability of automatic weapons and commercialization of livestock raiding, but also with the erosion of traditional conflict mitigation institutions, violence in the region has intensified. This tendency has been further aggravated by frequent droughts and floods, which fuel competition for livestock and pastures.
Our Peace Clubs will support and train young people through peace building techniques as well as reconciliation and leadership skills. The project will also enhance their capacity to counter misinformation, disinformation and manipulation, instead they will grow positive new relationships for reconciliation. The Peace Clubs are a mechanism that help young people to challenge stereotypes, prejudices and work together for development.
The project will develop the knowledge and capacity of 480 young people to uphold a culture of non-violence and promote reconciliation at the grassroots community level. 50% of the youth we train will become Uganda Unites members with 10% signing up to volunteer and start peace clubs in their communities. The project will indirectly engage 1,060 young people and increase the number of young people prepared and equipped to counter hate speech, radicalisation and violence in their communities.
