FAVELA DO SAPE
Dear Donor,
2018 was a tough year.
Brazil is still in a crisis and the Presidential Election process caused much instability in the economy and in the population´s mind. Funds are not easy to find and we´ve been suffering from the consequences of this situation for about two years now.
Given this situation, we had to re-invent ourselves.
We are in the process of moving out of the house we are renting to a cheaper place right in the middle of the Favela do Sapé, a poor community close to where we currently are. This will substantially reduce our fixed costs and will allow us to be better located, right where the demand for free education is strongest.
A new approach is also being adopted in relation to our teaching team. In association with a Refugee NGO, we are now hiring teachers who are refugees from different countries, but mainly from HAITI and SYRIA, instead of hiring teachers from the market.
That way (albeit modestly) we will be addressing two causes: youngsters that need free education and training to get a job (or a better job) and refugees who are in need of income to live a better life. Refugees are very eager for jobs. They are very professional and are very enthusiastic about the idea of also helping people who, just as them, are in need of a job.
Classes will start in March, after summer vacation. In the meantime, we are working hard on getting funds to continue our activities.
Your assistance is always very valuable and we want to thank you all for what you have done for this cause.
A very HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON to all of you!
With regards,
Maria Helena Dalla Bona
