At long last, with the amazing support of many individuals, companies, associations and families, we have moved into our new home!

Here is a brief tour to give you an idea of what you have help us to accomplish through your dedicated support. Considering the state of the world over the past two years, this achievement is undeniably miraculous. We are blessed beyond measure and remain dedicated to our pursuit to provide the best for the little ones who rely on us.

Not only did we overcome almost impossible odds to move the Children's Home to a new, safer, and more cost-effective location over the Heritage Day weekend, but you and the rest of our TLC family helped us to reach our Heritage Day fundraising goal of R300,000!

Amidst virtual popping champagne corks and confetti, we were blindsided a few days before The Big Move in the best way. An anonymous guardian angel donated
R300,000, matching the full amount we’d already raised from the fundraiser!

With our hearts full, our feet dusty from moving day, and our eyes leaky, we were overflowing with gratitude for the unwavering support from our village.

If you’ve followed our journey until now, you'll know that it has had enough plot twists to put a reality show to shame (though a lot more wholesome!) Through all these dramas and miracles, we still continue in loving commitment to our little ones. In total we've welcomed seven new little loves into our home and tearfully bid farewell to nine of our family as they left us for their forever homes. In light of these little lives that that touch our hearts every day, we are keenly aware that our work and our effort will never be in vain.

As we continue into the transition of the coming year we have still not received a single cent from Department of Social Development this financial year and it seems unlikely that we will before March or April next year. This is deeply challenging to our cashflow and has started to negatively impact funding appeals with other institutions as well. In this time all we can do is continue to call on those who care as much for our little ones as we do. They need us and they need you! And whilst some in high places may be quick to dismiss them, based on the missing paperwork they require to prove their worth, we won’t walk away. We had desperately hoped by now we would be in a position to ease up on these urgent appeals… but here we are.

We need you – we know paperwork doesn’t dim your view of their worth. So we ask you once more to rally your friends, families, churches, colleagues or classmates to help us fill in the gap where the system fails them. You can have your gifts amplified when you make a donation through GlobalGiving for Giving Tuesday on the 30th November 2021. The timeframe for having donations matched is quite specific so if you’d like to receive our 3 reminders through the day you can
 opt-in here.

Thank you for joining hands with us. Together we make all the difference.

Dear Friend,

I hope you and your loved ones are safe and keeping well.

I'd like to thank you, our supporters, for reaching out from near and far since our last update and during the current state of unrest in our nation to find out how we are doing.

I wish I could give you a window into the many amazing things in our home that continue to inspire us and keep us going even through our darkest days: Like the first steps we've seen and first words we've heard this month, the two sweet newborns that arrived this week, and the two forever families from Europe that arrived today to meet their children for the first time after waiting a year!

It is a challenging time, adding to the many challenges we have all already been faced with this past year. On Wednesday night we were thrown yet another curveball and we are running out of ideas as the hurdles start piling up. I sent out this video appeal out on our social channels this past Thursday, asking our community for some suggestions that might help us out of this situation.

There have been many people asking for a breakdown of our costs which you can find here.

Your presence and participation in our community of champions, supporters, and cheerleaders is so appreciated. We look forward to the day when urgent appeals like this are a thing of the past. For now we journey on...

The long journey to our new home and the sustainability it will bring. We are so close and excited to share our progress with you!

We invite you to join us on Sunday at 13pm SAST for a tour of our almost completed new home. All are welcome and you are welcome to invite friends. Even if you can't make it live RSVP here and we will send you the link to the recording on YouTube.

You Help Provide HALF of All our Needs!

We’re almost at the end of the third month of 2021! A year past the onset of one of the toughest global crises in recent history. Also a year past the time we had originally hoped to be in our new home. Most amazingly, and by the grace of God and you - our loyal supporters, we have managed to pull through with the most surprising resilience. Admittedly we are still in the thick of it, our team are feeling the same fog and fatigue that many have been expressing, but somehow hope still flows through our hearts and our home as we hear the babble and laughter of our loved little ones. While the timeline for our move has been pushed waaaay out, beyond anything we could have anticipated – stretching our endurance just that little bit extra, we have no doubt that within the foreseeable future we will finally be settling into our new home.

Despite the bank insisting we jump through numerous hurdles before releasing our bond, there have been some exciting developments in the wings which we can hardly wait share with you! But, since things are not finalized just yet we felt it prudent to hold onto this special announcement until all the I’s are dotted and T’s are crossed. Our next update will surely be one filled with celebration and appreciation. <3

As we wait on that exciting news do you want to know something else amazing!? It is through all our collective monthly supporters that HALF our monthly costs are covered! When we calculated the latest figures from the last financial year we were absolutely blown away and overwhelmed with gratitude for all of you who have stuck so loyally by our side through these times! It is through the gift of committed, continuous support that we were able to survive through these times, and for that the little words of “thanks” and no amount of virtual hugs will never quite seem enough. We absolutely appreciate and never take for granted the gifts we are given every day that allow us to continue doing the important work we love and are so passionate about.

As we continue about our daily work – bringing in new little ones with open and loving arms, and saying bitter-sweet goodbyes to the ones we have loved as they embark on the next chapter of their lives other things are starting to return to a certain level of “normal” too. Along with our local volunteers, we have started welcoming international volunteers again which has provided a welcome relief and some much needed rest for our caregiver team.

In these times of uncertainty we continue to welcome and appreciate any support that we are blessed with – whether it be for our daily needs or towards our caregiver salaries or toward the bond of our new home. Even just the simple act of bringing us up in conversation goes a long way to raising awareness – planting the seed that may inspire others to consider offering us their support. It all adds up to make such a big difference in our work as we navigate these uncertain times. Thank you for being part of this journey with us, and most importantly with them – our babies! Whilst they may never know your name and the gifts you blessed them with we see you and we appreciate you and we know that this work could not continue without each of you who help make this work possible!

As ever, please feel free to reach out to me directly if you have any questions, comments or feedback! I’m always happy to hear from our valued supporters.

To Our Dearest Team of Adopt-A-Cot Supporters,

As it is for everyone, I'm sure, it is still so hard to wrap our heads around the completely surprising turn of events we've all experienced this year. We are so incredibly humbled and grateful for your love and loyalty in supporting us through these uncertain times. It really is such a testament to our community of supporters who truly value the work that we do that, for the most part, everyone's support has been unwavering. It has specifically been our team of Adopt-A-Cot supporters that have given us the gift to survive this years unprecendted challenges - without each and every one of you it is difficult to imagine how we would ever have survived this kind of global catastrophe. Our hearts are overflowing with gratitude that we are able to still continue our loving care and passionate championing for the little ones who call TLC home.

Coping with Covid-19 safety protocols and lack of volunteers has certainly presented new challenges and has kept our whole team very busy. While our communications may be erratic and not as regular or punctual as we would hope, we so appreciate the grace our supporters have shown us in being patient as we figure out and make our way through these challenging times. Across the board our onsite operations team have done a sterling job in keeping things going and making sure as many bases are covered as possible through this season, and while we keep our heads down in day to day work, we are so very eager for our future. While we wait with anticipation for the finishing touches to be put on our new home, and plan our exciting future in the close-knit community of Walkerville, business as usual has to continue where we are to maintain stability in the lives of our little ones.

Not only have the obvious changes from Covid-19 been impacting us, there has also been a massive disruption in children's homes across the sector as governments push to implement "rapid placements" of many of the children-in-care as a supposed preventative, reactionary measure to the virus. It has been a significantly difficult season as we are forced to say goodbye to many of the older children in our home as they join foster families. While foster care is not our first preference for placements we have come to appreciate that there is a place for this role in the system and that there are many blessings that come with the children moving into the care of a more traditional family environment. That being said, the speed and lack of forewarning from authorities has been alarming and unsettling. All we can do is be contented that we have done our best to make each little one as resilient as possible in preparing them for this next chapter of their lives and keep them in our prayers.

Yet, as quickly as many of the children are being placed, new little ones are being welcomed into our home. The need for homes for babies who are being abandoned due to the huge surge in poverty and unemployment is overwhelming. We are being phoned every second day with desperate requests to take in more babies. Every baby we have to turn away truly breaks our hearts as we know most other homes are also already full to capacity. This situation is harrowing and yet we have to put on a brave face and continue making the difference we can within our boundaries that enable us to provide what each child needs without compromising on the quality of care each little one receives in our home.

This situation has starkly highlighted the need for more family-support programs - to prevent little ones being given up to the system in the first place. It is our dream that once our children’s home is stable and settled, after this transitional phase to our new home, that we will be able to start expanding on what we do; using our 20+ years of experience to start offering family-strengthening / parenting programs. We hope that you will continue to walk with us on this journey as we work towards this goal.

But, for now, thank you for every step you’ve taken with us along the way so far!
You are so appreciated.

As always, if you ever have any questions, comments or feedback please don't hesitate to reach out to me directly (faithj@tlc.org.za).

P.S. Also be sure to check out the awesome adoption book Super Stevie that is being launched on Monday 9th of November - World Adoption Day. 50% of the proceeds will be coming to TLC to help us pay off our bond! Please share with all your adoptee friends!

Dearest TLC Tribe,

What a year it's been!
We had barely sent out our last report announcing our plans to move when the unexpected and severe effects of the international response to Covid-19 started to hit the world. It has been a crazy couple of months here at TLC while all "business as usual" ceased and we started making provisions to keep our little ones and our caregiver team as protected as possible from the risk of coronavirus infection.

This meant that many of our staff were sent home for the first few months of lockdown, while a number of our dedicated caregivers selflessly put their hands up and offered to weather the initial lockdown onsite at TLC, away from their own homes and families. Miraculously we have been blessed to be able to survive this extended lockdown and are slowly beginning to resume more of our regular operations as the lockdown eases. However, things are certainly far from "normal".

During this time placements all but ceased, and dispite being at full capacity we were desperately requested to take in more babies as our nation saw and increase of babies and children getting abandoned by desperate and destitute mothers. With much serious consideration we decided to answer the call and have taken in 4 newborns during this time. They came to us as tiny little wimpering bundles and we have been amazed at how quickly they have chubbed up into gurgling little cherubs. We have also found a silver-lining to the lockdown, in that our babies and children are absolutely settled and flourishing in this much more contained and predictable environment, where they have had the same set of loving caregivers for weeks on end. This is definitely a great opportunity for learning as we set in new operating procedures in our new home.

Speaking of which, of course, this has all had a major impact on our moving plans. Whilst undoubtedly necessary, the lockdown set us back quite a bit financially. Much of the funds we had reserved for the the move were diverted to weathering the severe lockdown restrictions here in South Africa, and ensuring that our little ones maintained their consistency of care by providing for the caregivers staying onsite during this time.

Nevertheless, we are confident and hopeful that the amount is quite manageable to fundraise for and are preparing to extend a call to action, mobilising and guiding our international family of supporters in helping us raise there funds through their own networks. The amount needed to help us start this phase of TLC's new journey debt-free will be R1.8 million (about $105000). We will be formally announcing our fundraiser for this at our up-coming virtual Mandela Day Event, so be sure to keep an eye on our social media pages for when we announce this.

As always we are so incredibly humbled by your consistent and courageous support.
If you have any questions, comments, suggestions or feedback I'm always eager to hear from our valued supporters.

Blessings of health, security and peace to you and your loved ones during these uncertain and unsettling times.

With Heartfelt Thanks and
Kind Regards,
Faith
