Project Overview:
The STEM Hub Lab Project was initiated in Gboko, Nigeria, with the objective of empowering marginalized school girls through hands-on learning experiences in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). This initiative was designed to address the gender gaps in STEM education and provide practical opportunities that are often lacking for young girls in the region.
Commencing in the second week of December 2024 and concluding in the last week of January 2025, the project featured an engaging simple pendulum science experiment. This practical exercise utilized the following materials: thread, stopwatch, meter rule (100cm), pendulum bob, and retort stand, allowing participants to determine the number of oscillations over a two-hour session.
Over 20 students, comprising both girls and boys, actively participated in the experiment, gaining invaluable insights into the practical applications of scientific concepts. The hands-on approach not only enriched their understanding of physics but also fostered a collaborative learning environment.
Impact Stories:
The students expressed immense gratitude for the opportunities provided by the STEM Hub Lab Project. Notable participants, including Ms. Doose, Ms. Mimi, Ms. Favour, Ms. Elizabeth, Ms. Sefa, and Mr. Joshua, all in their final year of secondary school (SSS3), shared their personal impact stories through video links, highlighting the positive influence this project has had on their educational journey and aspirations in STEM fields. The participants extend their heartfelt thanks to the Gender Equality Club Nigeria (GECN) for facilitating this initiative and express their gratitude to the generous donors whose contributions made the hands-on skills training possible.
Special appreciation is also given to the donors whose contributions were instrumental in acquiring laboratory materials for the practical experiments. The success of this initiative has inspired the participants to advocate for further donations to replicate the project, extending its reach to more marginalized girls in Gboko rural community.
Call for Support:
To further extend the reach of the STEM Hub Lab Project and provide similar opportunities for more marginalized girls in Gboko and beyond, the students and project coordinators are soliciting additional donations. These contributions will be instrumental in replicating this successful model and ensuring that more young girls gain access to essential STEM education and practical experiments.
The STEM Hub Lab Project has successfully laid the groundwork for a dedicated laboratory space conducive to STEM learning in Gboko.
By empowering young girls and addressing the significant gender disparities in STEM education, this initiative represents a critical step toward fostering a more equitable and inclusive future in the sciences.
