STEM for Girls Is Our Call

By Ms. Medina Abdulkadir | STEM Promoter and M&E

TEAM AND FACILITATORS
TEAM AND FACILITATORS

The STEM Hub Lab Project continues to make steady and meaningful progress as we deepen our commitment to advancing girls’ participation in science and technology.

On 11 February 2026, Gender Equality Club Nigeria commemorated the International Day of Women and Girls in Science at Isien Rock Innovation College, Gboko. The event brought together four schools, 58 female students, 10 teachers, and 5 parents under this year’s theme: “From Vision to Impact: Redefining STEM by Closing the Gender Gap.”

This gathering was not just a celebration. It was proof that the STEM Hub Lab Project is actively creating spaces where girls can explore, question, and lead in STEM fields.

Participants engaged in discussions on Artificial Intelligence, Health Research, and Cybersecurity. These conversations were practical and forward-looking, helping girls see how they can shape the future rather than just participate in it.

The Project Director of Gender Equality Club Nigeria, Mimidoo Tijah, delivered a keynote encouraging girls to move from vision to impact  to pursue STEM boldly, break barriers, and lead innovation. She reminded participants that the International Day of Women and Girls in Science was established by the United Nations to promote equal access and participation for women and girls globally.

We are sincerely grateful to Isien Rock Innovation College for hosting the event and creating a supportive learning environment. Special appreciation also goes to Jacob Ayoki Driving School Ltd for funding the program and standing with us in advancing girls in STEM.

Three girls shared personal stories about choosing science subjects and technical pathways. Their testimonies were powerful. When girls see their peers stepping forward, confidence spreads.

An interactive session followed, including a presentation by Ayo Asaaga, Funding Coordinator and ICT Support Staff of GECN, on practical pathways into technology. Through “AI in Action – Nigerian Examples,” he demonstrated how young people are already using technology to solve real-world problems  from supporting farmers with data insights to improving community health responses.

In his closing remarks, Comr. Nyamsaaku Destiny, Principal of the host school, emphasized the importance of critical thinking. He advised students to use AI as a tool for verification, not a replacement for independent reasoning, especially in subjects like mathematics. Importantly, the school officially established the Gender Equality Club as a school-based platform for leadership and empowerment  a strong step toward sustainability.

Project Sustainability and Support

We extend deep appreciation to all donors who have supported the STEM Hub Lab Project since 2023, both local supporters and those who contributed through the GlobalGiving platform.

For over a year now, we have not received donations through GlobalGiving. However, our local supporters have continued to stand with us. Their commitment has kept the project moving forward. Our team has also intensified local fundraising efforts, strengthening community ownership and shared responsibility for the project’s sustainability.

This journey has taught us something important: when communities believe in a vision, they invest in it. And we will continue pushing building partnerships, mobilizing support, and expanding opportunities for girls.

The STEM Hub Lab Project is not slowing down. It is evolving.

Closing the gender gap in STEM is not just an idea. It is a call and we are answering it with action.
