The Freedom Theatre, a theatre that defined the meaning of cultural resistance, needs your help in order to embark on its first ever tour of the UK with a brand new production; The Siege. The Freedom Theatre has been described as one of the world's most revolutionary artistic platforms, but it has never been to the UK. We believe it is now time to connect British and Palestinian artists and facilitate the biggest touring production ever performed in the UK by a Palestinian theatre company.
The Freedom Theatre operates in Jenin Refugee Camp, an area severely affected by decades of Israeli oppression and internal conflicts and largely isolated from the rest of occupied Palestine as well as from the world. In the current socio-political context, artistic production in Palestine is very limited and the right to artistic freedom is constantly violated. The Freedom Theatre plays a crucial role in enabling young people to use art as a tool for individual and social change.
By touring The Freedom Theatre for the first time in the UK, we aim to introduce emerging Palestinian artists and to showcase outstanding artistic products created under very restricted conditions. The young artists will be given the opportunity to express their struggle to make quality art against all odds, and the performance will touch upon the role of art to generate resistance and to promote freedom of expression by challenging public perception and allowing new artistic voices to be heard.
It is important to raise awareness of the independent and revolutionary work of the Theatre and to establish its presence in the UK, thus enabling communication and exchange of ideas between artists and audiences. The project will build bridges of cultural understanding and innovative artistic collaborations, which are vital in a pluralistic and inclusive society. We believe that the play, created exclusively for this tour, will inspire and enrich the cultural production of both nations.
