This project will use Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) techniques to implement modern, low-cost mechanised borehole water-drilled over 100m deep with solar-powered/ electric submersible pump and 10,000L storage-to serve over 20 deprived rural communities in Ghana's Volta and Northern Regions. It will ensure sustainable access to clean water, improve health and sanitation, and enhance education, productivity, and development, supporting SDGs 1, 3, 4, 6, and 10.
Inequality and limited support have trapped millions in poverty across Africa. Over 2 billion people lack safe water. In Ghana, 2 million rural residents lack safely managed water, and 1 million-especially in areas like the Volta and Northern Regions-have no access at all. This deepens health, education, economic, and social challenges, particularly for women, people with disability and children. Urgent, coordinated action is needed to ensure equitable water access and better livelihoods.
This project will use Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) to engage communities in planning and decision-making. By combining local resources and global funding, it will provide modern, low-cost mechanised borehole water systems-drilled over 100m deep with solar-powered/ electric submersible pump and 10,000L storage-to serve 20 deprived rural areas in Ghana's Volta and Northern Regions. Areas with poor water quality, ceramic filters and UV treatment will be used to ensure safe, clean water.
The project will sustainably improve clean water access, reducing waterborne diseases and improving health in rural Ghana. It will enhance education by freeing thousands of children, especially girls and vulnerable groups, from water collection. Women's economic empowerment will grow as they gain time for income activities. Community ownership through PRA will ensure resilience, environmental sustainability, and progress toward SDGs 1, 3, 4, 6, and 10, transforming livelihoods.
