Together with Dick Wheelock, I was privileged to visit Chez Papa Geoff Orphanage in Affame, Benin for a third visit in December. This was my first visit since the new intake of a further twelve children and I had been apprehensive of how they would all blend in.
I could not have been more wrong. I found 24 happy children, totally at ease with themselves and the group, revelling in new friendships. This is all down to Dieudonne who introduced the new children with great sensitivity, and housemother Rosalie, “maman” and best friend to all of them.
During my time there I taught them nine French Christmas songs (ranging from Silent Night to Jingle Bells) and at the end we had a little concert. They were all very keen to learn the words - an indirect way of improving their spoken French.
Dick – as usual - worked his wonders with the machinery and in the “field” (20 acres of cleared jungle). He sourced and installed a new inverter for the solar panel system, replaced a broken hydraulic pump on the tractor and came home with soil samples for analysis. Dick is a skilled teacher as well as engineer and has the knack of letting the local chaps do the work under instruction – often much harder than just doing it himself!
