Chez Papa Geoff orphanage is now up to its full capacity of 24 children.
Local news is that so far Covid has not had a big effect in their area, and CPG has not had any infections. Long may this state prevail, but with Omicron becoming prevalent worldwide, who knows?
The farm had a good “Grand Saison” as the early planting season is known. The rains for this season are reliably plentiful. Now that the well provides on-site water, the establishment of trees and vegetable plots is much easier.
The second or “Petit Saison” did not fare so well. This always has less reliable rainfall, and this season was particularly dry. The drought has also led to increased tensions between the Fulani cattle herders and the local subsistence farmers. In one such clash, a farmer was shot and killed leaving 5 children. His wife left the children with their grandmother and has since disappeared. Grandmother, while keen to look after the children, has neither space to house them nor money to feed them. HATW is currently looking into ways to support the family.
On a lighter note, Dieu Donne is going to paint the orphanage, with the help of the children, during the next school holidays. I suspect that the children will have more enthusiasm than skill, but they will certainly work hard and enjoy themselves!
With personal visits currently impossible, we have to rely on somewhat poor-quality phone calls. There are still promises that the Wi-Fi connection in the village will soon be improved… let’s hope so!
In other news, the children thoroughly enjoyed their Christmas party They provided the entertainment too, with excellent singing, drumming, and dancing.
Thank you for your continued support!
