23 WOMEN TRAINED ON BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT SERVICES

By KEZZY ADANIA | project Leader

Kigezi Healthcare Foundation has trained 23 women in Business Development Services (BDS). These women have been running their businesses informally and unrecognized. They are now categorized into micro and small businesses. The BDS we run in phases and it will focus on Governance, Financial management including record keeping of finances and stock. Opening bank accounts. They were also trained on how to manage their workers through different aspects of motivation.

The informal sector serves as a primary source of income and survival for vulnerable populations, especially women and youth, who may lack opportunities in the formal sector. When empowered, women's enterprises can expand and create additional job opportunities within their communities, contributing to overall economic growth. Income earned by women entrepreneurs is often reinvested into their families and communities for essential needs like education, nutrition, and supporting other local businesses, creating a positive ripple effect. Access to resources and support helps these businesses build resilience against economic shocks, a vulnerability highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Empowerment initiatives, such as access to finance and training, give women greater control over financial resources and decision-making within their businesses and households, improving their agency and independence. As more women succeed in business, they serve as role models, helping to challenge cultural norms and stereotypes about women's roles in society and leadership positions. Financial stability reduces women's vulnerability to exploitation, harassment, and gender-based violence, improving their overall safety and security. Financially stable women are better equipped to invest in their children's education and healthcare, which helps break the cycle of poverty across generations.

This initiative will be our pilot project and we hope to see a number of women progresses from Micro, Small, Medium and large enterprises. The MSMEs are the biggest employers in the country. Focusing on this category and eventually taking up the youth in general will go a long way to achieve economic development.
