253 WOMEN JOIN COOPERATIVE GROUPS IN THREE MONTHS

By Ainemukama Prosper | PROJECT LEADER

253 new members have been mobilized to join the cooperatives in three months. These are women mainly in Rural areas and they will be exposed to the different skills available and start their lives of enterprise development. No of these women have been in the smallest cooperative groups and their success will encourage more disadvantaged women from the rural areas to join. The 253 have joined 7 different cooperative groups and they will also get into joint learning sessions at one moment.  The number of new members joining the cooperatives has been growing steadily over the past three months courtesy of the success stories of the original members in the area of mushroom growing, rabbit keeping and vegetable growing.

These groups they are joining started as small village savings and loans associations and then grew bigger by a number of village groups coming together and good leadership due to teaching on financial behavior by partner groups. The enterprise that is doing best in the most groups is the rabbit breeding because they are easy to rear, they multiply very fast and they mainly feed on vegetation where many poor people can not spend money on buying feeds.

Vegetables and mushroom growing is the game changer due to prospects of new market that is bigger.  young girls who dropped out of school as a result of pregnancy during the covid 19 pandemic and also due to lack of school fees have now been enrolled in groups for active vegetable and mushroom growing through village loans and savings associations.

We appeal to our partners for more financial support because this project has a tremendous potential to bring poor people together to pull resources that they use to develop small enterprises and generate income to sustain their families.
