UPDATE REPORT - CREATE INCLUSIVE LITERACY SPACES

UPDATE REPORT - CREATE INCLUSIVE LITERACY SPACES IN GHANA

At Young Visionary Leaders Ghana (YVLG), we remain committed to helping children develop strong reading, communication and storytelling skills through the Read and Narrate Literacy Program.

Since our March update, the project has received no additional donations through GlobalGiving. This funding gap has limited our ability to restart planned literacy sessions. However, it has also prompted us to rethink how the programme can be sustained through stronger school and community leadership.

Building Local Ownership

Our current focus is on reviving reading clubs through a community-led and school-led approach. We want teachers, community volunteers and local facilitators to play a greater role in organising and sustaining reading activities, with YVLG providing coordination and support.

The proposed approach will create opportunities for children to read together, discuss stories and practise narrating what they have learned. By involving schools and communities in planning and running the clubs, we aim to make reading a regular part of children’s lives and strengthen local responsibility for keeping activities going.

This work is still in the preparation stage. We are not yet reporting newly delivered reading sessions or additional children reached. Our immediate priority is to establish practical arrangements that schools and communities can maintain over time.

Why Continued Support Matters

Local leadership is essential, but the clubs will still need resources. Age-appropriate books, basic learning materials and support for volunteer orientation and coordination will help turn this approach into consistent learning opportunities.

Future contributions will help us equip and support the revived clubs while strengthening their ability to continue beyond individual project visits. Our next steps are to agree on leadership responsibilities, identify suitable meeting spaces and schedules, and establish the materials needed to resume activities.

We will share further updates as these arrangements are confirmed and reading sessions restart.

Thank you to everyone who has supported the Read and Narrate Literacy Program. Your earlier contributions remain part of its foundation. With renewed support and stronger community and school ownership, we aim to create lasting spaces where children can discover the joy of reading and build the confidence to share their stories.
