Ramadan is a time of compassion, generosity, and giving. During this blessed month, donations and Zakat increase significantly, allowing many thalassemia patients to receive essential, life-saving care. However, once Ramadan ends, donations often decline sharply, while the needs of patients remain constant and urgent throughout the year.
Thalassemia is a lifelong blood disorder that requires continuous medical care. In Pakistan, an estimated over 100,000 individuals are living with thalassemia major, and approximately 5,000–9,000 children are born each year with this condition. Each patient depends on regular blood transfusions every 2–4 weeks and monthly iron chelation therapy to remove excess iron caused by repeated transfusions. Without proper chelation, iron overload can lead to severe complications, including heart disease, liver failure, and hormonal disorders.
At KITCC, we are currently supporting 1,045 registered patients across Sindh, all of whom rely on timely transfusions and uninterrupted chelation therapy. While Ramadan donations help sustain these services temporarily, the post-Ramadan period creates a critical funding gap.
This is when patients become most vulnerable.
Even a short interruption in iron chelation therapy can result in irreversible organ damage. Likewise, delays in blood transfusions can cause severe anemia, fatigue, and life-threatening complications. With reduced funding after Ramadan, many families struggle to afford medicines, transportation, and consistent treatment.
Pakistan also faces a significant shortage of safe blood donations, requiring millions of units annually to meet national demand. Thalassemia patients rely entirely on voluntary donors, and any disruption in supply directly affects their survival.
Why are post-Ramadan donations so important?
Ramadan may end, but thalassemia does not.
Your continued support beyond the holy month ensures that children and young adults living with thalassemia receive the care they need to survive and live healthier lives. A post-Ramadan donation is not just charity, it is a lifeline that sustains treatment every single month.
Please support “Iron Chelation Therapy for Thalassemia Patients” on GlobalGiving today. Your contribution helps prevent complications, ensures continuity of care, and brings hope to hundreds of families who depend on us.
With deep gratitude,
Kashif Iqbal Thalassaemia Care Centre Trust.
